Any future in Alum MIG?

I work for a somewhat large company that manufactures car haulers. I fabricate and MIG weld aluminum car ramps and got to wondering about the future. Is or will there a demand for aluminum mig welders if I decide to persue outside of this company based of current experience?

I work for a company that builds both code and non-code aluminum tank trailers and every weld on every trailer is MIG. We use TIG units for repair and plumbing, but MIG will always have a place in our shop so I believe there is a future in aluminum MIG.

You must be psychic!

Maxall has a warehouse full of a new wire alloy. It is 4943, and has all the best characteristics of 4043, and 5356. It was specifically developed to address the feed issues of 4043.

Still waiting AWS approval. Once this happens the robots will take over.

Well, heck.

You probably don't even have to plug that lamp into the wall, what with all the "electrons" that surround the "wizard".

Re: Any future in Alum MIG?

NE ohio is just about the aluminum MIG welding capital of it all. With MAC Trailer employing about 750 and East Manufacturing employing almost 300 as long as truckers want aluminum trailers there will be those jobs here. The best outside body welders at MAC get about $20/hr and 50+ hours a week, East is a union shop, Teamsters Local 24 and top rate as of now is $16.57/hr with decent benefits and lots of OT.

Its not glamorous but its a paycheck, and both companies right now are offering one week paid instruction to new hires with limited aluminum experience.

I work at East on the flatbed line and we are 3 weeks behind schedule and have orders to cover us until april of next year, 2012 will be something like a 1000 trailer year for the company. MAC is busy as well.

Re: Any future in Alum MIG?

Customers don't buy trailers by accident, so that's good economic news.

Re: Any future in Alum MIG?

I work for Summit trailers located in summit station pa www.summittrailer.com and we do mainly aluminum rendering trailers and some steel trailers. I also worked for Spectec trailers in St clair pa before working at summit and we also did aluminum and steel trailers. I personally think there is always going to be a demand for aluminum mig welders because at both places ive worked at we had alot of people come in for weld tests that could weld steel but not aluminum and the didnt get the job. I think the welding schools, vo-techs, and tech colleges should focus more on aluminum .

Re: Any future in Alum MIG?

I've used a mig to weld aluminiumi before, and funny enough they were car ramps too, It don't make a nice clean weld like tig but its pretty strong, you just need to clean the soot off when you've finished
