Sorta' portable winch mount

Well I need a winch to go possibly pickup another welder. The only winch I have spare is a Ramsey DC200 which is a tow truck grade 8K winch... anyway made this setup all from material I had around the house. Handles were cut from an old wheelchair lift. The receiver is pass through. Also just made the receiver hitch for my Jetta a couple days ago. The mount for the jetta runs about 18 " into the frame and is bolted with 4 bolts either side. All 2" x1/4" wall tube.
On the Jetta I ditched the 5mph bumper and replaced it with the hitch..
No, I won't be towing with the winch between car and trailer. Will split the setup, use winch to load then remove winch again before towing. .

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose. I mean all it is saving then is in case the ball coupler came un hooked, what if the receiver pin fell out?

I just gotta play devils advocate as everyone else climbed over me on my hitch.

Re: Sorta' portable winch mount

Any way you do it there is a what if. However I personally believe in safety chains being attached to the vehicle somewhere solid. I lost a car trailer a few years ago, going downhill on a busy street 5 blocks long and a children's fourth of July parade going across the street at the bottom of the hill. It passed me at the top of the hill. I had to chase it with my pickup for 3 blocks and pull in front of it to stop it. 3800 dollars damage to the one car it hit and I was very lucky. Mac

Re: Sorta' portable winch mount

I use locking pins on all my hitches I really have no issue of it falling out. I could run a chain to the recovery loop on the lower right rear that is on all Jetta's if I felt it was an issue... the main reason I didn't add one was that it meant cutting a bigger notch out of the bumper plastic..

Re: Sorta' portable winch mount

Not trying to mess up the thread, but thought you guys might enjoy a little bit of Southern engineering. Had to go back a ton of years to find these pics. Actually the old grapple was painted at the time, although it was a few years old when painted.

I hear about all the negative things which should disuade (dissuade?) a person from doing things, and I gotta really think about it. I feel too many folks are just plain wimpy. You do what ya gotta do.

I scored this old hand winch at an auction, and modified it to serve as a truly portable winch. I've loaded an 8000lb backhoe onto the gooseneck with it. It's all about gearing The backhoe had broken down, and the guy wanted it out of his yard. I got it for free just for hauling it out of there. It was sitting next to a wall, and had to be winched sideways just to get a bite on the front end in order to winch it up on the trailer. To do this, I chained the winch to two trees and gave her Hell The old backhoe is still sitting out in the pasture behind the house

It's real handy, real heavy too

Chain it to anything stationary, and you're in business

The pin at the rear allows it to be chained to almost anything.

What I hear these days would have lost us the War (the REAL war, not this Mideast crap), too many people are risk adverse. No backbone anymore
