Want to check myself before plugging in
I am wanting to go 230v at home and have the dryer plug (NEMA 10-30P) on the wall. I bought a short 4' dryer plug that is AWG 10/3 30A and a NEMA 6-50R receptacle. The dryer plug that I bought has no colors or markings but the middle wire has slightly smaller shielding than the outside two. I would assume the outside wires with the larger shielding are the hot poles and the middle is the ground.
I just want to make sure I check this correctly so when I plug in the welder I don't fry it. To check, once I wire the dryer plug to the 6-50R I should have 115ish volts on my meter when I connect either outside pole (blades) on the 6-50R to the center ground pole(horseshoe shaped). Then when I put the meter across both outside poles (blades) I will have 230ish volts correct? Thanks for confirming (or correcting) before I make this happen. |

Re: Want to check myself before plugging in
That is correct. If all else use a meter to confirm the correct wire to pin configuration

Re: Want to check myself before plugging in
On the flat, gray 3 wire cords the center conductor is always the grounded/grounding conductor. Only on the round, black 4 wire cords will you find colors.

Re: Want to check myself before plugging in
TY. I wired it up and tested on the meter. Left bank 121.2 right bank 120.8 and combined at 242.0. Looks like it should be good.
Curious though...I took off the panel to check what I was running to the plug and it is 10/3 wire with a 30 amp breaker. Will that be enough to support my welder at max output without any issues? Welder is a Hobart 210 mvp with a rated max draw of 24 amps on 230 volts. My main concern was wire size over 40 feet. |

Re: Want to check myself before plugging in
I run my Millermatic 211 MVP on lthe same type setup. #10 wire 30A. breaker No issues. 40 ft. aint far enough to worry about voltage drop. Have fun.
