Material Management--controlling the disorganization--New Rack

Desperately needed to get a handle on my material, had stuff all over the place always in the way. I bought stock because I couldn't find stuff only to discover I already had some. This was my method to control the mess. Had it powder coated. Multiple storage areas including and belly shelf. I rarely use stock over six feet so most is less than that. I can handle tiny pieces in the yellow bins, organize by type of material, all thread, plate, etc.

The only problem was that I should have made it twice as big. Enjoy.

Re: Material Management--controlling the disorganization--New Rack

Given the quality of the design + build of that unit I'm surprised that you had the time to design + build it, your shop must be busy . Nice short ends cart, what do you do for longer pieces?

Re: Material Management--controlling the disorganization--New Rack

Thanks Gents.

bearston--for longer pieces I tend to cut them right away, I don't use lots of longer stuff and rarely over six feet. Didn't spend to much on the design this is the second one of these I built. Here is first one for a buddy:

Great job!

If it was mine I would leave one side without any hangers to be able to store bigger pieces of plate (say 3'x6'). Other than that, it looks awesome.

Very nice ! we all need that one but just have to find the time to do it. You must have many hours invested but well worth it . Now it cost a grand to fill it !

Yes indeed. It's amazing what we make to make it organized and useful. However, WHY DO WE WAIT SO LONG ?? I am at fault . I retired and NOW ; FINALLY, doing projects that make things easier. If I would have done this YEARS AGO, everything would have been so much easier. You young guys, do the things now and do not wait. It really makes a difference. TIME
and money is the issue ! Again, great work. Glad you invested in time to paint too !

Re: Material Management--controlling the disorganization--New Rack

Very nice man I need to make something like that, I have a boat load of aluminum chunks that I don't wanna throw out cause I still use them but I just h r them thrown in a box I made, but I leave steel stalks leaning up by my bench, not a food idea though with 3 Harley's and my bandit and Holstein running around.

It looks real handy to have. Small cutoffs get lost when not put up somewhere.

You might want to concentrate on carrying your welds all the way around the corners of the tubing. I don't see a strength issue here, nor a waterproof issue, but it's a good habit to get into.

Re: Material Management--controlling the disorganization--New Rack

Very nice and a huge amount of work in it! I know one day I'm gone build something similar to hold all kind of metal rod for my lathe but a lot simpler and less time consuming because I got only 13 years before my retirement Maybe I use wood instead

Re: Material Management--controlling the disorganization--New Rack

Thanks gents for the comments.

BD1--you're right we shouldn't wait too long to do these for of things, life is short and this sort of thing does save time in the long run.

How much time do I have in it?--I would estimate that I have about two weekends of solid work into it. I try to use salvage steel when I can. I can get it at $0.20/lb I would estimate that I have about $150 in materials, ~$75 in the 1200 lb casters and the powder coat cost me $140. All up ~$400. To me it is worth every penny and then some. Like you say I should have made it years ago.

Cheers.
