From my experience it all depends on where your working and what your making. Alot of smaller shops that have been around long enough, don't use prints and often have guys there that know everything in and out that can train you everything simply by showing you.

Then there's big companies, that have lots of welders there, from junior welders to senior welders. Places like that, they've also been around and they use prints in their everyday work. They've got design engineers who spend full time work weeks designing these prints and re-working them.

So it all depends on the job, it's the same with math, some jobs you use it everyday and others you don't use it at all.

Also, alot of schools won't even touch base on the WPDS (weld procedure data sheets). I was lucky enough to get into a program that had it in the course load, and we spent quite a bit of time getting to know WPDS sheets and how to apply them.
