Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Harbor Freight on Friday to pick up a few things like a electric cut off tool, 1 ton arbor press, a set of LED trailer lights, some air fittings, wire ties, 2 5/16" trailer ball and of cores what ever i might find.
I had one of those speed clamps the ones for $1.99 that had a part for the handle missing ( I bought 12 of them some time back) and a pair of there mechanics gloves that the seam was not sewed ( same deal I bought 12 pair). Now these items still have the tags on them and are brand new so I take the with me to the store.
I pickup everything on my list and then some a new clamp and gloves to trade for the bad ones.
I am at the checkout line and I take out the bad clamp and gloves then the new clamp and gloves and tell the girl I want to exchange them.
Thats when things start to go wrong she said I need my receipt for the bad items. I say what I only want to exchange them! Then the manager comes over and tells me they won't exchange them with out the receipt no matter what. Now I have a cart full of goods about $200 worth and this guy won't exchange a $1.99 clamp and a pair of $3.99 gloves now I am getting and tell him what he can do with his stuff and walk out leaving the cart full of stuff sit there except for the clamp and gloves I took in.
This is the last time I will deal with that Harbor Freight store. I will drive 52 miles to the other one next week and try it.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've read that they have changed policy nationwide and taking in your receipt is mandatory in all cases.

I've encountered the same thing, except I had brought the receipt.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just got finished loading up your cart with merchandise so it's understandable they would ask for a receipt. Had you stopped off to see them on the way in before doing your shopping, the outcome may have been completely different.

But I have to agree with hog and question the logic of traveling an additional 104 miles - with or without a receipt.

Not that big a problem i'll just use them for my other gun. But a week later i was in the store again wanting .030 tips but found their entire lot of tips where mislabeled with .035 tips. Bought it to the attention of their manager who just looked at them and stuck it back on the shelf to sell. His response was i'll let someone at corporate know... LOL... Just another perfect example of why i ALWAYS try to open harbor freight stuff before i buy. I've seen parts with rust, flaky paint, missing parts, scratches, dents, and misaligned parts. The hf sales reps dont seem to mind. They're basically hs kids working pt anyways and dont give a hoot. Sorry to hear about your bad experience though. Seems everyone has their HF horror stories.

LOL indeed. A few months ago their whole stock of flux core wire was clearly labelled DC ONLY ... and of course it was stocked together with the 90A AC welders.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry, but I work in a similar store and we require a reciept for all exchanges, refunds, and warranty repairs. The problem is we have many people that steal and then bring things back for cash, or use it to exchange toward the product that they really wanted but couldnt steal because of store security tags.
Its a crappy world that we live in but it is simple enough for us honest people to throw our reciepts into a box and save them.
Please dont be mad at the store or its employees for following policy.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im sure youll be missed, and i'll bet no one will ever notice you've gone.........
if a retailer doesnt ask you for your phone number when your checking out youll definitely need to hold onto your receipt, not all retailers keep America's purchases on record so when you forget or lose it....
sometime...... not always but sometimes the responsibility does fall onto the consumers shoulders, is it wrong..... nope. this is how they are starting to weed out the crooks, the ones that steal then return for that gift receipt, eventually they get what there wanting for free with built up credit.
I keep all my receipts on items over $10 just in case, if its below that and fails....oh well

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The printing on my Harbor Freight receipts start to fade away in my garage. Unless I photocopy it, or put it in a dark place, there is nothing left to read on the paper after about 3 weeks. On the expensive stuff I buy there, I always photocopy the receipt and save that copy with the owner's manual. On the cheap stuff I buy there, I throw the receipt away because I usually just file13 the offending tool and get another new one when I drive past the store later.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

having done customer service at Best Buy for 4 years, i understand where they are coming from. its common knowledge to bring your receipt for exchanges. like said before as soon as you walked into the store you should of walked up to the register and asked about doing an exchange. how do the not know that was product you pulled off the shelf and tried to "exachage". ive seen it all. they are just protecting them selves and have every right to.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you know how hard it is to keep track of your receipt for all your tools, clamps etc.
Here is what you should have done, just spent the $5 on a new clamp and gloves. Then go back later with that receipt and the old gloves/clamp and exchange them or return them.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I had to pickup some items I ordered at the welding store that is right down the street from the other HF store. I took the gloves and clamp in and ask the young man at the register if I could exchange them because the clamp handle was broken and the gloves was not sewed right he said yes so I went and picked up the two items and took them to him rang up a exchange and never asked for a receipt. So I took them out to the truck and went back in and bought everything that I left in the cart at the other store.
From now on I will make a list of everything I want to pickup at HF and when I have to go to the welding store stop in and pick them up at the same time.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree, I woulda bought the stuff new and then walked back in with your new receipt and old items and swapped them out.
As a Christian, I can not condone stealing. And I do not think this is stealing when you know you paid for the items but simply lost the receipt.
I always open stuff there. Even if it is sealed. I open it. what are they going to do about it?
One guy said I could not open something to check for parts and make sure nothing was bad. I said, well, can I buy it, open it and if something is broken, return it? He said yes. I told him he was an idiot because that's the same result just a different method. so if you have to buy it first, so be it. But if you buy lots of things, check each one first.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As you may remember I said I would drive the extra to the HF store 50 miles away to get the better service. Friday I went to the credit union to make a deposit and over to the HF store to pick up some more of the #65654 F style clamps as they work good and a few other item. Their wasn't but maybe three other people in the store at that time in the morning so I got my items and went to the checkout. I put the items on the counter and handed the young man my 20% off coupon and the one for a free 25' tape. I paid him and took the stuff to the truck took the receipt out of the bag to put in my expense folder and the coupons I gave him was in with the receipt, then I checked and he gave me 20% off all (4) clamps and gave me back my couponsit was a good day.

Re: Say what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that coupon thing is another new policy of theirs. last week i went to one of their stores and they scan the coupon and return it. bought several of their $5.00 transfer pumps--the red one--.found out theey work great to remove most of the atf thru the filler pipe before pulling the pan for a filter change.
