Wiring Sqare Wave 300

I am looking to wire up my Lincoln square wave 300. I got some info. from the guys in the lincoln part of this website. They said it would be OK to go with a 80 amp breaker because I only have 100 amp service to my garage and will not be using the machine to its max with the type of work I will be doing. I need to know what size wire to use to the panel box and what wire would I use to make a 25' cord for moving the machine around a little? I think what I would do is use a receptacle and a short (2') cord most times but when needed I would use the 25' cord. Thanks for the help.

What's the duty cycle and rated output on the nameplate?

Re: Wiring Sqare Wave 300

I would go with #6 wire. I am NOT an electrician, but that is a reasonable size for an 80 amp breaker.

I was waiting for a real electrician to respond.

Re: Wiring Sqare Wave 300

I agree #6 copper would make for an almost 100% duty cycle circuit, which is likely to be overkill for what is sure to be a dedicated circuit to a welding machine. But that would be my recommendation also without knowing anything more about the machine and installation.

Does the machine have a plug on it? What are its factory-sized input conductors?

BTW, there is nothing wrong with a 100A breaker in a 100A panel. Obviously, the more of the 100A you draw through it, though, the less is available for the other circuits. And this might change the conductor requirements, depending on the machine's duty cycle, and your personal decision as to what duty cycle to wire the circuit for.
