Down Range Dummies

A local range asked me to build some hangers for them. People shoot them all the time and they wanted something durable and cheap. I found that the old hangers would get hit a lot in the joint where the top of the hanger was welded to the lower half so I added a deflector there and I hope it works. If you can think of anything else just let me know.

BTW they are paying with a case of Winchester 5.56 frangible ammo. That is worth more than I was going to charge in the first place, shhhh.

Re: Down Range Dummies

That looks sturdy, but I suspect that the deflector is going to draw fire

Re: Down Range Dummies

Well if it don't work I'll try a reflector.

Re: Down Range Dummies

I have been known to try and make the hanger swing That was just with handguns, though (9mm or smaller), so I don't think I was doing any damage. Ours had deflectors like those. Nice work!

I typically use 3 inch wide 1/2 inch plate on edge for hangers. Bevel the leading edge and they last a few years. Not sure exactly how they are using the ones pictured, I use a single vertical for 'gongs' (6-10-18 inch slices of cold roll) and a double on shelves for pin etc.

Re: Down Range Dummies

Kudos on the worlds best father daughter bonding time, I can not wait until my girls get just a little older. FOr something like that where weight would become an issue I would still suggest using strap instead of bar stock. Maybe 1/4 by 2 and bevel the leading edge. With a moderately sharp face then anything other than a square center hit will deflect and you would be able to "erase" the occasional ding from a good hit with a grinder. Pull them down every few weeks and touch up the edges untill they get down to 3/4 of an inch or so then replace.
