mig ?
A welding thread came up recently on another board I frequent and along comes a guy who claims to have some pretty impressive credentials who says you should never use any type of weave pattern on anything less than 1" plate. He said this about a sample weld that a guy posted displaying a pass made with a weave with to it:

Penetration has nothing to do with weld pattern or lack of. Weld penetration comes from proper machine settings. Where you put that penetration has everything to do with wire/arc placement. You keep it in the root..... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I abosolutely do not profess to be a professional weldor, BUT, the quote (above) makes sense......marko.

Lately I am wary of almost anything that is posted on that board. I too would like to hear the thoughts about using weave or whip in light fab when using MIG only. |

I B a Xpurt, so I'll B bakk after I get my eyes uncrossed from reading that.
I never weave, unless I've embibed fermented spirits. I preferr the knit 1 pearl 2 technique for MIG.

Well, it's a damn site easier to run straight....and if there was some "X-purt" out there that would un-equivocally tell me that this is the way to do it......I'd listen to him !
Personally, if I want a little wider bead, I just give 'er a little more stick-out and move a little slower, and the bead spreads out real nice !

'Allen' is right.
If one wants the look of a Tig bead-use a tig machine. Not everything needs to be max strength/fusion though-fabricators need to use their brain pans and make the call on that. There was a post over there about some work Poison spyder did and the owner came on defending his spot welds- he is just plain wrong, but the people that buy his wares dont really do things that might put them upside down-they just want the 'look' and are willing to pay for it. Course they may pay more than cash if they decide to get serious with their rigs while wheeling with those 'spot welded' cages Allen " a silver cat turd is still a cat turd" ha ha, lovin it

Dont know who the dude was that passed on that info..but after 38 years in the business I have to agree with almost every word of it...dont agree with up to 1 inch..weaves are still not justified over 1 inch unless capping with stick.
