Headache Rack

Hey guys, new here. I just thought I'd share my current home project. The first pic is of the design I came up with, the second one shows the bolts (and washer mods) to mount it to the bed in the stock slots (beer's a bonus!), and the third pic is what it's mounting onto!

I"m building it from 1" x 2" tubing and 1 1/4" square tubing.

This is just for sh*ts and giggles from work. It's one of my uphand 7100 dualshield wire welds. Of all the weld numbers to get stuck with, I get stuck with an "&" sign.

Is this going on a regular bed? what's gonna make it sturdy?
Weld looks good, we use our initials at work. I can definitly tell what I built from everyone elses from the welds though. You gonna knock off that splatter, right

MC, design looks good. I make mine completely out of 2" square tubing. They hold up real good. Good Luck,

Hey thanks guys, the work pic is a few weeks old.

I'm from Kelowna, Canada. Originally from Jasper, alberta. I've been welding (counting the college courses) since 2003. Speaking long term, I'm fairly new to the trade, but it's been an interesting ride to get where I am.

I've never really done any truck mods myself from scratch, so the rack is a first.

As it stands right now, I've got a good chunk of the fitting done. Once everything's all fit up, I'll weld the thing out. The pic is a test fit in the truck. Once I pick up more material, I'll get to work on the internal portion of the rack.


I'm fitting it with fluxcore at home, and I'll probably drag it into to work and weld it out with .045 hardwire (and clean all the spatter off! )

scratch dragging it into work. Seniority based layoffs kind of stifled that.

The frame is welded now, all with .030 fluxcore. horizontal support is next to come! Altered the design a little bit. Because some shmuck forgot to turn it around, the picture's of the side that faces the cab.

Hey thanks guys! I can't speak for everybody, but I love seeing what other people are working on, it's like this wierd obsession...like looking at welds...wherever I go. DOH!

It's completed. I havn't done much straight fluxcore, but I just went with the little experience I had with it, and things seemed to come out aight. After wire wheeling, I went over the thing with a hammer and chisel to knock all of the spatter off. At some point, I want to beef up the bracing and extend it down on one side, incorporating an oxy/act bottle rack onto it (inside the box, of course!) Ahh...long term goals.

I forgot to mention that all of the cutting was done by hand with a zipcut. Those things are the cat's meow!

Man that thing came out looking nice! Congratulations on a job well done!!
It makes me want to rush out and buy my first welder and make a stand or bench.. I have to stay off these darn boards, they cost me money

when i built mine one thing i wanted it to do was go all the way forward so i didnt loose that 2 to 3 inchs of bed space i took 3x3 angle 3/16 ran it all the way down to make bed rails, then notched the front of it an inch to push the rack all the way forward. putting rails down the side made all the strenth diffrences in the world. by the way im new here my names Tyler and im 17
