Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

Great question.

I went to a garage sale where there were 2 welders for sale and asked if he had any tanks for them. He looked at me like I had 4 heads. I said " you know, the metal cylinders that have gas in them", he said " Oh, you mean bottles".

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

Is it soda, pop or coke?

I typically use a cylinder to hold my shielding and cutting gases and a tank to hold the gasoline in the lawn mower and 'burban.

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

Is it true the high pressure cylinders for welding gasses are made on a metal spinning lathe, or basically that process?

Lab bottle, like the size of a quart beverage bottle, never seen one hooked to welding stuff. strange it is in the lead now.

These vids are on making Scuba cylinders, but the process is the same for other HP gas cylinders. 1st one is on alum cylinders, 2nd one on steel.

Only one correct answer:
cylinder, according to OSHA.

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

I went with other, because I use both cylinder and bottle, at times.

OSHA doesn't live in my garage, have my friends or speak my language. It's one good reason I'm not in business!

Question: How small does a cylinder need to be before I call it a Baby Bottle?

Answer: Depends on who I'm talking to, where I am, the time of day and particularly, my mood.

I know I don't correct the speech or grammer of the person selling 'em to me.

I call 'em "cheap", then toddle off to exchange them.

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

When I went down to Airgas and bought my 150cf C25 I was careful to say cylinder so they wouldn't see green written across my forehead.

I don't know if it made a difference.

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

Cylinders hold compressed gas.
Tanks hold gasoline / liquids.
Bottles hold (preferably) rye whiskey.

At least that's the way it is around my house.

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

I would probably pick cylinder, but they all work. . . however

I would rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy!

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

Most often it seems like cylinders are not actually called anything specific at all and "cylinder" is just presumed when the contents (and sometimes size) are referenced.
For example, if someone says: "I need a 250 oxygen" everyone understands that to mean a high pressure cylinder of 250 *ft (* I don't know how to type the cube symbol ) and so further details go without saying.

Good Luck

Re: Bottle, tank, or cylinder?

Well, what I meant is not that I don't know how to type it, but that I never bothered to remember or note even the common codes, so without looking it up I was out.

I know it's there somewhere¿ by typing ALT+ # # # #
Like so:
1 2 3 ™ ° ¶ ±

but I'm still too lazy to look it up, so I'll just cut-N-paste yours:
this one ³
And now I've got that one ² too.

So I'll just come back here to cut-N-paste if I ever need them again.

Good Luck
