Funky Two Step Journal Repair..

Have 2 Rubber covered rollers to repair..

I could'nt get the end too hot so the rubber would melt..
Hmmmmmm.......
What to do....

Here's the worn shaft..

Name: Shaft worn.jpg
Views: 848
Size: 47.1 KB

Here's the bearing thats going back on..

Name: Bearing.jpg
Views: 845
Size: 58.7 KB

Thats way too much to fill with weld..

Name: Too much to weld.jpg
Views: 848
Size: 47.5 KB

So here's what we're gonna do..
Just weld as "normal" and make it all nice nice..

Name: Weld 1.jpg
Views: 845
Size: 44.5 KB

Put it in the lathe and turn the new bushing step..

Name: Finish step 1.jpg
Views: 846
Size: 44.2 KB

OK...
Now I have to go down front and make a bushing..
Back in a few..

...zap!

Re: Funky Two Step Journal Repair..

I hate the other lathes...

After 20 min. heres the new bushing..

Name: Bushing.jpg
Views: 840
Size: 61.5 KB

.005 shrink fit so heat it up!!

Name: Heat it up.jpg
Views: 840
Size: 54.0 KB

Now heres a little trick for you..
The bearing landing is .900 wide..
So make the bushing .700 wide..
Install in the middle of the landing...
And now you have .100 to fill in on each side so when you finish turn it you won't turn all the weld off..

Name: Center it.jpg
Views: 840
Size: 40.2 KB

Now weld it...

Name: Bushing welded.jpg
Views: 843
Size: 39.2 KB

Now finish it!

Name: Finished shaft.jpg
Views: 848
Size: 45.4 KB

The new bearing surface is .0015 bigger so the bearing will "tap" on with a light hammer...

I gave the journal where the key is the "once over" with the welder just so I know everything runs true after..
And we do not have to re-cut the key either..

I get all the fun jobs...

(And this only took 2 posts......)

Re: Funky Two Step Journal Repair..

But, where's the dime????

Interesting optical interference banding in the pic of the plain bushing.

You didn't have to skim cut the keyway at all?

Nice job as usual Zap.

No we don't..
We try everything we know to stay away from the keys..
Before with the stick welder it was pretty tough to do..

But with the tig now its relativly e-z..

Yep, nice work as usual, sure wish I'd learned the machining end of the deal at some point in time.

Great job, you have both ends to do, right?

That's why you get all the fun jobs!

Re: Funky Two Step Journal Repair..

I don't see the rubber on the roller. It is hard for me to sometimes visualize what is going on. Looks like a great job.

Re: Funky Two Step Journal Repair..

This kind of rings a bell. I remember reading about sleeving journals that could not be welded up as usual because of some reason I can't remember (something to do with how they were heat treated maybe?).

Anyway, shear genius as usual.

Re: Funky Two Step Journal Repair..

I wish I had a big lathe to do that kind of work. Then again I wish I had room for a big lathe. Great job.
