The Float's Not Floatin'...

Mrs zap came home a little while ago and said..

"The Falcon is running like crap!"...

So I said "I'll have a look at it"..

Yeah...running really bad..
Felt like the choke was shut or something...

Took off the air cleaner and there was gas bubbling out the vent on the top of the carb..

I know what that means...

Name: Float.jpg
Views: 1379
Size: 63.7 KB

The float is full of gas..

Here's what we do..
First drill a hole in the bottom to get the gas out and provide the way to find the leak...

Name: Drill hole.jpg
Views: 1376
Size: 33.0 KB

Upon taking it to the air compressor and filling it up with compressed air we see the seam is very porous..

Name: Bad seam.jpg
Views: 1379
Size: 36.3 KB

So sealing that is no problem..
We go into Mrs zaps stained glass room and spy the welder of choice for this job...

Name: Welder of choice.jpg
Views: 1376
Size: 58.5 KB

And now the seam is resealed..

Name: Seam fixed.jpg
Views: 1379
Size: 45.3 KB

But what to do about the hole??

Next post..

Re: The Float's Not Floatin'...

Ok now about that hole we drilled...

We all know you cant seal a hole like that with just solder..
It stays as a "blowhole" just like welding a piece of tubing shut..

So heres the answer..

Mrs zaps stained glass copper foil!

Name: Copper foil.jpg
Views: 1377
Size: 33.5 KB

Very simply stick it over the hole..(the back side has adheasive on it..)

Name: Stick over hole.jpg
Views: 1375
Size: 38.5 KB

Now seal with solder!..

Name: Sealed.jpg
Views: 1374
Size: 40.3 KB

Reassemble carb..
And now (you can't hear it..but I can)..
Purrs like a kitten...

Size: 66.3 KB

Now my fingers smell like gas..

I get all the fun jobs...

Ummmm No..
No it would not..

She would take the falcon over a new anything..
Thats just the way she is...

And I like it that way...

I can still fix what she drives myself..

You can't do that with anything made now...
And then the only option is the stealership...

Great home repair zap! You are a true solderer-erer.

How about a 4 barrel intake for that fal-coney?

Re: The Float's Not Floatin'...

What year is the Falcon? Can we get some "full-body" shots of it too. I agree the '07 Lincoln Navigator isn't the way to go, a '63 Thunderbird however, that's riding in style, I also just happen to have one that needs a new home.

Nice fix, but remember this is weldingweb not solderweb

The first pic is what it started out as...

I took this apart to every last nut and bolt..

Dad rebuilt the 200..
New everything...

Dom Robichaud transmissions rebuilt the C-4..

Bobs auto trim Bellingham Mass. did the seats..
Autobrite Autobody ..Bellingham Mass. did the body and paint..
We did everything else..

It got stuffed in the nose while having an exhaust system done at a friends house by a front end loader that was doing a swimming pool...

Got 500$ for the damage..

Found a new nose in Wells Maine...

Parts donar car in Pelham N.H. ...
Took the best of each other to build this car...

Built the car in the street in the heat in August 2002...

Was like a 1 to 1 scale model car in my house in pieces...

Was the centerspread feature car in The Falcon club of America magazine in August 03..

Even the VIN # ends in 666..

And by the way..soldering is in all reality welding...

That Falcon is too cool! I would rather drive something like that than a 2007 anything.

Nice to see that it gets driven and not just a trailer queen. Cars like that diserve to be driven, that's what they were built for. Great job restoring 'er by the way!

Are you sure Mrs. Zap wouldn't like it a little more with a 302/347 under the hood?

I had thought about that but with a 289..

We decided to keep it a all matching #'s car..

And besides..I'd have to change the rear end to a 9" with a V-8 in it..

The one in there now would "grenade" itself in no time...

Nice ride Zap! My folks had an early 60's Falcon when they first got married. In response to your wife not wanting to drive some newer wheels, does she have any sisters available?, I have available for trade, 1 wife with 1 high monthly payment.

Nice car, Zap. Nice restoration job, too.
Under the hood reminds me of our first truck. A '63 Ranchero.
Same engine, I think.
Thanks.
