How to convert a stick machine to a tig machine...

I wrote this up for a guy on another message board, and a third guy wanted to put it up on his site.

If you catch anything wrong in it, let me know. Keep in mind that this is written for beginners.

Here is a pic of mine (I got to get a better picture):

Why not go for the whole hog? I added a bridge rectifier for DC and a scr voltage control on the 220 input so I could use a foot pedal. I knew about the possible problem with AC on the transformer but have not seen any heating problem. I have done a lot of aluminum with it.

I forgot to say that I picked up a used Lincoln high frequency box for a reasonable price.

I have a Stickmate AC/DC that I was thinking of trying to convert to tig. I got the tank already. Any price estimate on how much it would cost?

In that case Jack, thanks for cropping the pic. At her age it shouldn't matter when she opens her eyes and sees a beard hanging out from under the helmet, I understand small children will bond to whatever they see.

if you've already got an ac/dc machine then you can scratch start tig with just a bottle of argon, regulator, and a tig torch (about $50) ... and for about another $200 you could pick up a used High Frequency box off of eBay and give aluminum a try also.

I highly recommend Mike W's 220 foot controller though. I learned to TIG on a big Miller machine and it's tough not having on demand amperage control.
