Discipline actions taken

We have taken the following actions with two members today:

1) A new registrant selected a user name clearly intended as a direct and personal attack on another member of the forum. We disabled the new user's ability to post messages unless he provides us with a different user name and an explanation of his intentions in joining.

2) After receiving several complaints about an individual's repeated, high-volume use of the Private Messaging function to solicit members for another welding forum, we have disabled that member's signature, avatar and Private Messaging privileges. We also have asked the member to review our User Agreement and marketing policies.
This action was NOT taken because the member is soliciting for a potential competitor of WeldingWeb. In fact, while we have noted the solicitous nature of his postings over the past 3 weeks, we specifically did NOT take action and had no intention of doing so -- until other community members complained.

I'm making public note of these actions because they represent unusual steps in the management of WeldingWeb as we strive to maintain this site as a welcoming and open place for discussion of welding-related topics and for discussion of other topics by welders.

If you note serious abuses of this site and its policies, please let us know before they have a chance to degrade the environment here. And if you have questions about these actions or any others, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you.

Re: Discipline actions taken

As discussed before, the semi-open door policy of any member publically posting is open game. I think it would be appropriate to share the information and/or user name so all members are "in the know". If you need help tracking the IP to find the actual member whom created the "other" name, let me know.

Re: Discipline actions taken

We are able to track IPs and we manage those as needed. At this point, I prefer not to share the names of members involved because their purposes are not always nefarious. I believe that it's ordinarily enough to end the problem without calling out the individual.

I will admit that there may occasionally be exceptions.
