HI Speed Tool Steel To Mild Steel..
Had to make a plunge tool for the face of a big 'ol piece of steel in the lathe..
Here is the pieces.. Simple enough.. Grind before welding then clamp and weld.. (Yeah I fixed the vice) Top of the bit.. Little stitch on the bottom.. The hook for digging on the end.. More on why next.. ...zap!

Re: HI Speed Tool Steel To Mild Steel..
Gotta turn out major metal in this just for lightening only..
Leave a 2.5 Dia center and then drill and tap 1-8" 2" deep after.. Gouging near the center hub.. Looking for a groove like this.. For a regular carbide insert tool to do it's damage.. Turn to the outside edge while taking off 1/4" at a time.. Next!.. ...zap!

Re: HI Speed Tool Steel To Mild Steel..
Even with a small gouge tool...
If you try to take too much off at one time? This happens.....X3 Did'nt break off at the thin part.. Broke at the body.. Go figure.. Oh yeah.. 120 amps give or take.. 3/32" Red. .045 70S-2 I get all the repetitave jobs.. ...zap!

Re: HI Speed Tool Steel To Mild Steel..
What did you use as filler? Do you ever have problems with it cracking out on the HAZ when using er-70s?

Re: HI Speed Tool Steel To Mild Steel..
So you're saying the plunge tool was the HS tool steel, and the big ole piece is mild steel?

Re: HI Speed Tool Steel To Mild Steel..
Your beads look really nice. I probably should have made my screen name booger welds. On the stitch do you use short "U" type movements to get it to look like that?

Re: HI Speed Tool Steel To Mild Steel..
Did you pre-heat the high speed? It probably busted because welding made it brittle. Unless you pre and post heat. I would have silver soldered it. Most if not all cutters are silver soldered.
