Am I nuts for wanting to do this?

Ok guys I am thinking about building a small crank up tower for my truck. It will be aluminum and the sections will be about 6'6" tall and equal about 25' extended. Basically it is a lot of cutting and Tigging. The design is simple and basic.

I was thinking I could make a notching jig for the drill press, and a jig to hold all the parts in place, tack it all up and weld away...

I already have a 60' version of the tower, I was going to copy it just make more sections.

Does anyone see any "things" I am missing that would be a problem?

The 60' one is trailer mounted and rater large. So I was thinking that a small one for the back of the truck would be nice. Small and quick.

The for what part:
Radio communications, it gets an antenna on top

Can you put Comm. Equipment on a 25' sectioned tower without making the truck fall over (I'm assuming you know what you are doing and don't expect to drive with this up).

Yes with no problem.

Anyone have any idea how long it would take to do?

It will take many many joints prepped and welded, it probably isn't worth the time.

It's fine if you really want to do i. The only negative would be if you have employees and someone is injured on it.

I think it would be more cost-effective to rent such a unit when needed.

Re: Am I nuts for wanting to do this?

I am considering doing it since to buy it will be about $5000.000.
I know it will take a LONG time to make but thats a LOT of TIG practice

As far as safety, I am using the same specs of one rated at 13x the wind load and twice the hight, so I am not concerned about that.

I need to come up with a part count and figure out what the stock $$$ would be . That alone may stop me...

Excell really comes into its own on estimates like that.
Have you used it much?
