Ventilation System

Well I decided I need something better then a small fan through the wall to draw the smoke and fumes out of the shop. Came up with a idea using a fan from a hot air furnance. Its not to scale and It may change some as i go, but you get the idea anyway.

Re: Ventilation System

got some of it started today. Wish I could have gotten more done. One thing I forget to add in the drawing above is that I will have dampers in the piping so I can control the amount of air being sucked out. Trying to keep as much of the heat as possible in the winter. Here are some pictures for you.

Re: Ventilation System

nice set up, I would use an electrical box and a switch for on and off, and make sure you fasten down that wire so it doesn't end up in your pulley, that would be a shocking thing however a good test of your breakers.....

nice set up, wish I had one too.

Re: Ventilation System

If your not going to use both pickups at the same time, how about a shut off plate/valve to close the one your not using and put more suction to the one you are?

Re: Ventilation System

I'm wondering how that fan-motor combination is going to deal with air flow restrictions and/or variable flow rates? Won't take much additional loading before the amps on that little motor will climb way up there, get hotter than heck. Maybe restricting it on the input side it'll just void out more than load up. You got an ammeter so you can watch it for awhile?

I plan to SWells. I want to control all the air flow and onlt draw from where i want at one time. I plan on making a door for the front of the box. That way I can open it up and turn the motor to high speed. This way wahen I am blowing down the shop or make a lot of smoke I can move the air fast.

I added a bigger motor then what came on the fan originally. the motor is a two speed one as well so I can control the air flow better. By controlling the suction side it will be easyer on the motor to.

Thanks for the concern though. Good to have people bringing things up in case something gets missed.

Re: Ventilation System

Seeing how we're micro-analyzing this, if your shop is like mine there are probably enough leaks to provide make up air. Any benefit to putting an intake vent in the opposite corner to pull the air across the shop.

I thought of that to. I have a window and door with a window in it that opens on the other side of the shop. Plus when I am painting auto's, I have a small intake hole where I put the sticky filters on. Here are a couple pic's of my make shift paint booth. You can see the small exhaust fan in the back. Now I will pipe in the system from the drawing which will simulate a down draft system.

Here the wall in the center of my shop showing the door and vert hole

And here is the paint bay.

Re: Ventilation System

Got a little more time on my new ventilation system. I really need to stick with one project before I start another . Oh well, I actually got to run it today and the motor worked great and the draw was prefect on the low speed. All I need is a few more pieces and everything will be completed.

Got the door made and on.

Name: 1.jpg
Views: 1169
Size: 36.6 KB

added a foam seal strip and the bottom hole.

Name: 2.jpg
Views: 1164
Size: 40.3 KB

Made a small hood

Name: 3.jpg
Views: 1163
Size: 43.6 KB

And the piece through the wall. I need to add a rod that will open and close the door from inside, I just screwed the door shut for now. I all added the foam seal like the inside door. Need to keep the warm air in. Also the the piece through the wall is on a slight slant to the outside in case any condensation forms on the metal.

Re: Ventilation System

Well I finished the last couple pieces and tried it out. Works great. I could have the fan running a little faster on low speed though. I may change it some time soon.

Re: Ventilation System

Wow! Nice job. I don't know much about furnaces but, at work we have a waste oil one.
When the guy's came to clean it they said to be careful when we turned on our vent system because it could cause some problems with it. May not be anything to worry about. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I know what you are talking about here. When ever I have the fan on I need to make sure that a window or door is open . If I forget, when the furnace runs I start pulling fumes for the furnace pipe. Stinks real bad and the burner flame can be off a bit. Best part about this setup is all I need to do is open the window and the ventilation system does it's job

and Thanks for the comments guys.

hello put a fresh air vent in the garage with a motorized damper . that way you wont have to open a window any more . when you power the fan up the damper will open to later
