Re: 6013 dcen

I am ashamed to have my "Chicken Scratch" welds shown in the same site as such art work. These have been amazing. Really enjoyed this post all the way through.

I was not around this site four years ago to see the original pictures. Thank you pipe fitter for sharing the latest pictures and bringing this thread up to the front. I don't think I would have seen it otherwise. I really enjoyed looking at all of them.

Always a pleasure to view your welds pipe fitter (and dream of emulating them!) It's satisfying to see the slag lift and curl.

Great to see you here again.

Re: 6013 dcen

Alan, I have to be honest with you... I hate 6013 with a passion!
Everytime I try 6013 (-) or (+), it seems if I long arc it only for a brief instant, I throw down slag that will ruin the entire weld!
It's the electrode I loath... as the slag always tries to get ahead of the arc and mess me up. Much as I try, it's my downfall... 6013 drives me crazy!!!

And then, la-de-da, along you come and post up welds like this...

Re: 6013 dcen

Rick,

once you get the hang of 6013 it is a dream to run. you just have to watch your puddle and arc gap. I am on a small job at the moment where I am welding alot of tabs and 6013 is what the job is called for. Nothing special just fencing.

Re: 6013 dcen

Wowser, those don't look like welds, they look like the perfect skin of a snake. Or some weird centipede because the spacing is so perfect on the weave and the curling slag as if the thing is molting.

Seeing stuff like this is SOOO helpful to new guys. It helps imprint in my mind what to strive for. Think I'm going to go drop my hood and practice a lot tonight. Thanks Pipe Fitter for taking the time to post up these pictures.

As a 30 year pipewelder in the USA I must say that I'm thoroughly impressed with your work. It does me good to see fellow craftsmen are still around, and I hope there are young men working around you that can benefit from your example. You make us proud!

Re: 6013 dcen

I like to weld with 6013 been using it for 40 years when I got my first welder a 295 amp AC only monkey wards I paid $145 brand new complete with leads and a couple pounds of rod.

I all most never use it anymore but it works great. I use an inverter welder now and it really makes 6013 weld real nice DCEN.

If you tell some one around here you weld with 6013 you get the responce that what ever you weld will never hold, or your part will fall off in cold weather. Or only a farmer would ever use 6013 to weld something with.

I'm not a pro but I have built lots of things over the years with no problems with 6013 rod.

Scott

Re: 6013 dcen

good to see you back jackson, seems you have been keeping busy if that trailer is anything to go by, lovely job .myself ,and any of the welders i work with, approach a tig root using a wide gap, usually 4mm 6" and over, i think thats 5/32 your money. some of these guys prefer a knife edge, i like a land personally, shows there are lots of options just find what suits you best, and practice. these pics should help explain lads. alan

Re: 6013 dcen

pipefitter- I always enjoy your work, but i do have one question regarding your cap size. I presume that pipe is sch 40? I know our inspector wouldnt allow a cap that size on any sch 40 pipe we do even with tig root. I have put caps close to that wide on some of our auxillery steam lines ( 4" , 6 and 8" sch 120 1 1/4 and 2 1/4 chromoly, but once i get into the sch 160 i have to put 2 or 3 small weaved beads as caps. It may be the strictness of our boiler inspector as were dealing with 3000+ psi of superheated steam, but again i love your work, roots are simply beautiful.

Re: 6013 dcen

pw as always, your interest is much appreciated. i suppose if i am to post here with any cred, i may as well talk a little about myself, i have no intentions of turning this into a cv i have over the years worked with various exotics, cunifer, ali brass , chmolly, shipyard, titanium stainless aerospace, and duplex , hasseloy, alum, with this small fab company i work for now oh and plastic no s"""T : 2 years solid before i started posting on these boards i was working at diary stainless, now it tends to be more heavier steel work, what i prefer. i have worked 22 years for this company, great outfit. in this time i have worked with various 60 and 70 series rods, i think you guys know which i prefer. i know i can answer some of the questions asked on this board through pics, at least this is my intention . ps to answer your question pw yes it is sch 40 alan just various pics

Hey Pipe Fitter

What size gap would you be running on that first pic? Just curious. Thanks.
