Video of satellite shoot down

There is a video at the following website: http://www.dodvclips.mil/index.jsp?a...y=FRdamp250959, that shows the shoot down of the broken communications satellite.

Both the satellite and the missile that shot it down had fuel tanks that were welded under the strictest tolerances, and that use a variety of techniques to ensure that the fuel gets directed to their engines correctly.

We're going to have a story about welding fuel tanks for spacecraft in the March issue of Welding magazine. The new issue will be available around March 15.

Re: Video of satellite shoot down

That was pretty crazy. I remember reading something about that about a month ago, they said the satellite was going to be visible as it made low passes over the US. Apparently when they launched the satellite, it never made it into the correct orbit, so it was slowly drifting back toward earth ever since.

Re: Video of satellite shoot down

Thanks Bruce I teach science and spent more than a little time searching for a downloadable (school filter shuts out everything) copy to use in my class.
I will use it in the fall.

Re: Video of satellite shoot down

This was done in response to the Chinese shooting down one of there satellites last year. The only difference was that the Chinese satellite was in a much higher orbit. I remember seeing the Chinese satellite being shot down and being a bit concerned in regards to a first strike.

Poke around these youtube links for more info on the AEGIS BMD program.

The below link is Japanese video (we have sold Japan our BMD system)
The kill weapon test is really neat. This is the same device that was used to shoot down the dead satellite early this year.
Enjoy...

Re: Video of satellite shoot down

soo much money.

SOO much.

i watched my tax money fly and blow up my tax money
they should have extracted it from orbit and given it to me.. give me something to tinker with.

wouldn't mind one of those tiny turbine engines on those missles in that video billdacat posted, either..

Re: Video of satellite shoot down

That video is from a static test of an actual "Kill Wepon" The device is about the size of a 50lb propane tank. It is able to get itself lined up on a intercepting trejectory that is closing at over 12 km per second.
Your tax dollars are been well spent....
