how the repair was made?
HELLO TO ALL,
a few weeks ago, a bucket truck going east bound on hyw 40, in st. louis county. the boom came loose, and struck a bridge, and it punctured two beams. of course the repair was made by welding, but it would be interesting to see exactly how the repair was made. was a patch welded over the hole, was a patch flush welded in the hole. i guess we will never know, unless MODOT made a video of the repair. wlbrown |

Re: how the repair was made?
more than likely the damaged area was cut out with a torch. then the cut ends were preped with a bevel. Next a new section of beam was cut to fit and spliced with a full pen weld and ultrasonically inspected.

Re: how the repair was made?
are you saying a flush patch? i think this would be
stronger than just a patch welded over the hole. anyway i sent MODOT a question, and ask them if they knew how it was repaired, and if a video was made. just curious. wlbrown |

Re: how the repair was made?
It sounds like there was damage to a horizontal beam. If so, the damaged area will be removed and a new section fit and welded.

Re: how the repair was made?
I work for Canada's second largest bridge manufacturer...
I would say that the beam was ultrasounded and inspected for cracks, any cracks would be gouged, and any split or punctured area's would be removed and a new peice of bridge plate would have been welded in place. if something had to be removed, 100% pen. welds would be required and ALL repairs would be made with 8018 unless otherwise specified. Not sure what the codes are in the area? and then Q/A'd again with ultrasound. |

Re: how the repair was made?
One day, I was merging into freeway traffic as the overpass beam weldors were just pulling away from an over-height damage, patch job. Their l-o-n-g leads were unreeling onto the road. I blew my horn to get their attention, and they flipped me off! Neither of us stopped.
So yes, if it was that crew, the following day; they could have used bondo!
