3G & 4G Fluxcore weld test

Hey Guys,
I have a weld test for a job coming up soon and in order to be successful i need to complete the welds so they pass x-ray.
Now the only problem i have is that i haven't had much experiance with postional welding with fluxcore, so what i am after is just some general tips and tricks i should know to help me through. I think i'm more concerned with the vertical weld as i'm not sure if i use the same technique and normal bare wire.
The tests are single v-butts on 25mm plate with a backing bar. I'm not sure what wire or machine it will be with yet as its going to be at another workshop and i don't knbow what they use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ben

P.S- this is a great site, very informative, could spend hours reading through every thing!!

What grade and type of wire do you need to burn?

Re: 3G & 4G Fluxcore weld test

every fluxcore wire runs a little different, self shielded or dual shield?

i hope they let you run some practice, if you go in there cold turkey, without having run fluxcore before it would be very tough to pass a test.

Re: 3G & 4G Fluxcore weld test

Hey guys,
i'm not too sure on what wire they are going to be using as of yet, i only got brief details yesterday, but i should find out in a few days.
I have done a bit with 1.2mm Verticor 3XP, but mostly only in a flat postion.
I will however have a chance to practice before hand at my current job so i won't go into it completly blind.
I have done these tests with bare wire and have passed so i should be right, but at this stage i'm just not 100% confident with the fluxcore.
Also would anyone have any picture of these welds just to get an idea of what they are to look like?

Thanks Ben

That veritcore is nice wire to run, it's all about having your settings right as you don't move the gun to the side much if your heat is right, just more or less pump it in and let it wash itself out to the sides.

Dual shield doesn't run much different than 7018 Certical up. Just keep your filler on the leading edge of the puddle advancing upwards with a small tight weave. I weld anything from 3/8" to 18" thick steel on a daily basis with fluxcore. 1/16" and 3/32" filler. If your using 1/16" good vertical setting to start you off is around 24Volts 200WFS.

Re: 3G & 4G Fluxcore weld test

Hey mates,
I got around to having a practice for this test last nite and i think it went alrite.
The only thing i had trouble with was the root run. When i cut a piece off the end and cleaned it up it had slag inclusions on both side of the root, but it was burnt in nicley in the middle of the root.
I had it set up with a 3mm gap and knife edge. Has anyone got ideas on what i can do difffently. Maybe i should put a landing on it?
I've got some pictures but not of the macro, cause i was only using my phone and could't get a decent photo.

Re: 3G & 4G Fluxcore weld test

we call those slag inclusions "wagon wheels" when they run all the way up the sides of the root. It took me a long time to run perfect roots with fluxcore. Keep you wire at the top of the puddle, move quickly across the middle and watch the sides flow in. The middle will take care of itself, concentrate on filling the sides. What kind of angle are you using?

Re: 3G & 4G Fluxcore weld test

Oh ok, i didn't really weave the root run, i just went straight up with a stringer but i went a bit slower to try and let it build up. I will try a slight weave to try and burn in the edges a bit more.
With the angle of the torch i have just above horizontal, like you said try and keep it above the puddle..
Thanks

Re: 3G & 4G Fluxcore weld test

If you have a .5in root gap you should be able to put in two stringers for the root. Use a very minimal amount of oscillation. Keep your gun right at or just below horizontal and keep the tip of the wire at the front of the puddle. go slow enough where you can see the sides of your puddle "wet in". Do not grind any lands on your plates if you are using a backing bar.

I have a 3g and 4g one inch plate test with flux core. wire size will be .045 vertical and overhead. just need the recommended volts and amps for 3G and 4G...stringer or weave on both positions...appreciate any feedback.
