Rocket engine welds!
I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with me.
I went to the Space and Rocket Museum in Huntsville today with my son's 4'th grade class. All the stuff to look at and I was examining welds, even taking macro shots of them. These were mostly welds on a J-2 rocket engine. The J-2's were the engines used for the second and third stages of the Saturn 5 rockets used in the Apollo missions. The material appeared to be a 300 series SS, but could have been something more exotic. The funny looking one had been ground SMOOTH, I'm not sure what's going on there. ![]()

Re: Rocket engine welds!
I don't see any problem. I wander around all the time looking at stamped concrete and critiquing it. ( Spent 8 years doing that stuff.) Went to Hawaii and took pictures of buildings under construction. I think you fit in fine with the rest of us. Now will someone please tighten the straps on my jacket its getting a bit chilly in this padded room.
Thanks for the picts. |

Re: Rocket engine welds!
Your not alone Joe, I was at the Smithsonian and spent a bunch of my time looking at welds too.

Re: Rocket engine welds!
I don't see any problem with those welds. Hey, it's not rocket science... oh, wait a minute, it is rocket science. Never mind.

Re: Rocket engine welds!
Just don't look at the welds when you're on a carnival ride, or you'll never get on one again!

Re: Rocket engine welds!
No kidding carl. Don't get on the ferry down here and look at them either. I look at welds on everything. I guess it's just habit now.

Re: Rocket engine welds!
I like to look at about anything man has dreamed up and built, whatever it is. I look at welds all the time. I've been through the Space mueseum at Alamogordo, NM and found that a great way to spend half a day. Also got a private guided tour of Kitt Peak in Arizona a few years ago. Got to see several small telescopes and got a top to bottom tour of the big telescope. They have a big machine and welding shop in the bottom of it. There are a BUNCH of welds in that thing.

Looking at the operators of carnival rides has kept me off.

Re: Rocket engine welds!
I went to the arch in St louis and my wife wanted to know what I could possibly be taking a picture of that close to the thing. Unfortunately the pics didn't turn out.

You didn't wait for the camera to pre-focus?
