aluminum backer

I have a pc of 3/8 aluminum bar about 3' long & what i would like to know can i cut this up in different sizes to be used for a backing when welding up holes.
I was told the aluminum would be as good for this as the copper spoon or what ever its called. Thanks for your help.

Re: aluminum backer

Yes, I use 3/8" aluminum to back holes in sheet metal all the time. Just Hold it tight to the piece, and weld it shut with a mig and the aluminum will not stick to it.

I honestly do not know as I have never tried it. the trick was shown to me with a mig and I have always used it with mig. I will however tomorrow and see how it does with stick and flux core, and let you know how it does.
