Re: Old Welding-related Pictures
I bought a couple of bound volumes of this from a library, wish I would have bought more. This is one of the better cover pictures.
These are from the war years and have some interesting ads, some from a bronze welding rod supplier about repairing very large cast iron machines using brazing. I will post some when I get some time. It may be a while though. |

Yes, I looked at the link yesterday and wondered if anyone else had also noticed the figure on the far wall; looks like war-time psychological propaganda (graffiti).

Re: Old Welding-related Pictures
Prior to starting my mechanics apprenticeship back in '67, a mate of my father gave me a set of three encyclopedia titled, Engineering Workshop Practice, this was the third edition, printed in England in 1947.
I've kept them ever since and, thought I'd scan a couple of pics to add to the collection. I actually used a similar profile cutter in NZ back in '74 when, I was employed making forklift chassis, among other things. Just makes my Samson CNC seem not so special....kinda.

Common sense was more common back then. That, and they would have been watching the old Merry Melodies cartoons. Seems to have work for me..........

Re: Old Welding-related Pictures
There's another thread on here (600 tons-win loose or draw) that got me thinking about big hydraulic presses.
A company I know of in Holland installed an 8000 ton press which, I thought was pretty big so, I did some digging and came up with these. A 50,000 ton press that was built during the 1950's and, I believe is still in use in the States. More pics follow...

Re: Old Welding-related Pictures
It was last used to press forgings for The F35 Joint Strike Fighter Jet however, it seems the press is broken, at least it was back in 2009.
Developed a crack that was going to take $68million to repair.....don't know if Alcoa ever did the repair, maybe someone can shed light on the matter.

Re: Old Welding-related Pictures
This is an awesome thread! The '42 SA200 I recently bought has a brass US Navy Property plate with the machine's ID number and a Ship number on it, really cool piece of history. Two stuck exhaust valves are being soaked and worked free, it's almost ready to fire off for the first time in who knows when.

Re: Old Welding-related Pictures
The ingenuity of man has always amazed me. And this thread is an accurate description of why.
These people worked in conditions considered appalling by todays standards, yet, they built the titanic, the empire state building, the 50k ton press... the rocket ship / lander to the moon. I wish i had lived 100 years earlier, and 100 years later than i currently to do to see where we were, where were at, and where were headed. |
