Re: hitch mounted BBQ pit

ya it would probably be better on a small trailer but i wanna make one just like that except half that big. it would be perfect hitch mounted for tailgating and stuff imo.

Nothing wrong with getting as much input from as many sources as possible.

Jack, Have you taken a look at some of the different units offered for sale in your area to get ideas from and adapt as needed? There's obviously some basics that you'll have to follow but beyond that you're limited only by your imagination.

Re: hitch mounted BBQ pit

Tape measure, divide by 2 you got 1/2 as big.
I like that but would not use it attached to the vehicle. From what I see add two more foldaway wheels and then your set! That is considering it's would be only half as big

I thought those fold away wheels were wheelie wheels!

no i havent ever seen any hitch mounted things like this except for the pics i took and posted in here. ive never caught the owner outside to talk to him about it either.

i think the wheels are a great idea. in case yall cant see theres a fold away one like that on either end and then theres a jack up near the hitch. when the guy takes this thing off his truck, he puts the wheels down and rolls it up his driveway. its really neat.

ive made my first draft of drawings and i got basically all the measurements of the pit and smoker part from horizon smokers. it is their classic.

http://www.horizonbbqsmokersstore.co...-Smoker/Detail

i was first thinking of buying a pit like this and then just modding it to how i want it b/c that would be a lot easier in the long run. it would be fine except i cant find something that i would like for less than like $600. im hesitant to spend that much just to cut it up... any suggestions?

Also check into tag laws, most states have a cow if you cant see the tag from the rear and will get you a ticket from the nice policeman. I'd prefer a trailer as well, easier to hook up, easier ti unhook, beer runs are possible while someone is cooking,

i dont have a plate on the front of my truck b/c you dont have to in texas so i could just put it on there and leave it.

Re: hitch mounted BBQ pit

i bought a little hondo jr by new braunfels smokers today for $90. its exactly what i would build and is probably cheaper than what parts would cost me. now all i have to do is come up with some kind of mount for it

Re: hitch mounted BBQ pit

That may suffice, since it doesnt have wheels that actually roll on the road, I think it should be considered part of the vehicle and not considered a trailer, also remember it has to have lights to illuminate the tag.

Re: hitch mounted BBQ pit

ok try to envision this. i have 2x2 pipe coming out of the reciever hitch like a foot or so, then turning 90 degrees and going straight up a couple feet and then it hits the grill. do you think this 2x2 pipe infront of the liscence plate will get me a ticket?

For the record I was just kidding with him; I meant nothing by my post. I totally agree a well planned project will be a successful project.

Jack, my user name on Dieselplace is Jasondt2001 also.

Glad you found something that'll work, post up some pics and these guys might have some good ideas on a mount!

If you're gonna drop a nut putting the thing on the receiver, why not just go ahead and put it in the bed of the truck?

I know, I know.......... It's curb apeal

Kinda hard to pick up on the tone of a comment with the written word which is why I use those little icon guys so much. Never thought much of them until I realized without them it's too easy to read into a statement something that isn't there.

Thanks for the clarification and boy am I glad I didn't respond the way I was at first!

Re: hitch mounted BBQ pit

Jack,

Here's a couple of pictures of the unit I built a few years ago. I have some Inventor (3D) models of if somwhere, if interested. I do know that it's one heavy son of a gun!

I installed a 2-1/2" x 1/4" receiver tube on the bottom of the grill/smoker, and made a large "L"-shaped bracket to haul it on; in the 'tow' position it's high and close, and in the 'grill' position it's lower and away from the tailgate. I also added a small stub of tube on my car trailer, and plug it into there when (and that's rare!) I go racing...

I have some more pics of the build, if interested...

Chris
