Re: out of welders

Welding and crafts period are a dying profession. The big thing in the 80's and 90's was burying in kids minds that kids should go to school to make sure they don't have to use their hands to earn a living. Well now our country is paying for it (especially in the bay area of california). Where I work we are hiring 50+ year old new hires because we cant find anyone that can meet the requirements. Not that there is something wrong with the more experienced guys, but they are going to retire so soon after re-hire that what are we really gaining?

Re: out of welders

Today if you layed off or looking for work. Its time to shut your mouth and practice your beads. Tons of work everywhere for WELDORS. Just cuz you own a hood or even a rig don't mean your a weldor. All my buddies across the nation are turnin down work. And don't go lookin for $80 to $100 an hr plus double time or huge per. Just weld do a good job and the big boys will find you work, cuz they want YOU on their next job. Once your in your in. Be a craftsmen and you'll stay burnin rod.

Hell I am on a D.O.D. job in Guam as we speak. I've been here since Nov 15th. My wife had a fine xmas, with our 3 month old son(our 1st born).
But, I'm here to do a job and not to b**ch, my network is very important to me. I always do my best where ever weld. Its a blessing to work with good guys who respect your craft and know what your sacrficing to do their project. I've even developed a limp over here my damn wallet is so full I can't walk properly. When i finish this project I can take all the time off in need. Maybe even a couple years. Bottom line of they are willin to fly my county *ss to GUAM there is a global need for true welders.

Re: out of welders

Haha why don't you tell that to the 20 odd businesses I have applied for. And I'm not looking for a 80 hour job. Just a job. Which thank God I start one Monday. Maybe you should introduce your self and be more friendly before you start shooting your mouth off about how there are not true welders who don't know how to work. Good for you that you have a good job but not everyone can move to Guam. And if you own a rig at least it shows your are serious about working because that is a lot of cash to come up with. Good day.

Re: out of welders

I'm 32 yrs old and was lucky enough to be raised in a time and place that holds the best weldors in the world. I haven't had a day of formal training from a school. I lived next door as a child to a pipeliner. He was a GOD to me. He along with his travelin buddies taught me most everything I currently know. I didn't mean to upset anyone, but america has slipped from a mfg power house for a reason. Most americans are lazy and only lookout for #1. We have a network of 18 weldors that travel across the US and I'm the youngest by 21 yrs. A weldor is one piece of a large puzzle, and a critical piece. We get our jobs because we are known to do perfect work and stay until the job is done. I was taught to know my place in that puzzle and be proud of it. It takes a lot of grit, skill, and selfworth to maintain that attitude. And yes I have two rigs one I'm retiring and another I'm going to build up when I return home. I LOVE my job because it's the thrill of brotherhood in a world that is focused on ME. I'm in Guam becuase we keep our clients happy. We get the jobs that are unknown, that never get advertised. Our client list has a wide range of companies in all aspects of construction. The project that I'm currently on will have equipment 36,000 feet deep in the Mariana Trench the deepest subduction zone in the globe. Can't really give any other details. To stay busy all you need is GRIT. Trust me to stay in GUAM on 24 call and missing my son's 1st holiday season is tough. But, I am the only one that could fly this far, and pass the physical in our group for this strange job.

Re: out of welders

So if you cant talk about it then dont. Not tring to be mean in anyway here but its welders not weldors. So I guess you didnt go to gramer school? I have applied at 15 diff places here and not one call back. There is no work here well if I want to get paided 11.00 an hr I can find a job but I am worth more than that. So I guess you are also saying if we didnt live by you we are not part of the best. Just to let you know the best Pipeline welders come from local 798 its been known from the first Alaska pipeline. So if you dont want to tell us anything about where we can sign up you should just keep it to yourself. So go have fun in Guam! I DIDNT miss my sons first Christmas and loved every sec of it.

Sorry, but a machine that welds is a welder and a human that weld is a weldor, you need to look it up. It may help you find a job, if you new how to spell your trade...lol

And gramer is grammar....luc ***

I grew up in western OK so I know a couple 798 hands. But, my group welds more than just pipe.

And that is what I'm talking about it thats GRIT to do a job any time any where. Look at Red Adair or even Earl P. Haliburton. When a job called they went. It is said for me to see you correct my grammar and my work ethics and then complian about being worth more than $11 an hour. Its like sales 101 something is only worth what someone will pay. Guess it $11 for you.

I'm just tryin to give some hope and that work is there.

Plus, I'm bored as hell and my internal clock is super messed up and I have all the time in the world the ship is out for trails and I have about another 84 hours to kill.

Oh, I more thing my RIG is at home in my shop and I still getting rig pay @ $15.00 guess my rig is .......well i guess you know what im thinking

Re: out of welders

ok you are right. I didnt know that. and the other grammar was a typo. I have been looking for work for 3 weeks. Every temp I call says call them tues. I have taken some weld test and passed all of them. They all say there not hiring at that time. Sorry I was kinda rude on that last one. Just stess is kicking in. I wouldnt mind joining 798 but they want me to start out as a helper and not pay a good dem. I am will to do the helper but 42.50 a day wont even buy dinner for all three of us. I hope something comes up mon or tues or Imight have to leave hem here and go out alone. (dont really want to) So what all do you weld there? the 11hr was with a temp place and I cant do that to many mouths to feed.

Re: out of welders

And if your in a real bind...pm me and we can talk. Sorry if I came across snotting, I just have a streak of pride a mile wide. Hell, a few 798 hands taught me how to weld in the late 80's. When the oil boom went bust. Talk about pride, one was my nieghbor for most of my life.

Re: out of welders

try emailing ALLOY@COX.NET. Be brief just give them your number.

And remember work is work upgrade on your time not the bosses. I your going to work for a temp, they are prob charging $20 plus for your labor. So for a few days show thier client how good of a weldor you are may get hired direct.

Re: out of welders

I have a meeting on tues with one that placed a friend of mine before jv called him back to Cali. The last job I was at was witha temp I showed up early everyday and anytime they were working on sat I showed up as well. They laied me off because they didnt have anymore work to do. I guess I worked to hard. lol. He did tell me once it picks back up he would call but I cant wait that long. Oh wait I think I have waited. I am willing to travel but no work means no money so I cant make it that far and last for the first paycheck. Is that email for a local place or travel. I was thinking I could work here for about a month save up and then have the money to make it the first two weeks. Even if it is 11 to 16 an hour money is money and it is more than what I have.

Re: out of welders

Food for thought, we always try to be the best where ever we are. And Tulsa if full of "the best welder in the world" is hard to be a migger in t-town, Got to school or join the 798 if you want to compete in that market. We all have to pay to get in the door. Hell I've been with my boys a long time and I'm the one in Guam...lol NOT BITCHING

Re: out of welders

I thought about school but wont even think about tulsa welding school. To high and heard nothing but bad things about it. Heard vo-tech is ok. I guess I will run by 798 its not that far from the house. Heard they are hurting for some greens to come in. Somthing like someone stole a lot of money when they left.

Yes the 798 union had some crooks at the top. We heard about that. But, they can keep you hooked up. They claim to have 10million man hours for 09. But pipelining is tough work and you'll miss alot of holidays and b-days. And a scarifice only sucks if it not worth it. I am not union never have needed to be. And I agree Tulsa welding school is a scam. Is Tiger Welding school still around one our guys taught there years back.

Re: out of welders

My wife and kid will travel with me for the next few years until he goes to school. I think we could live out of a 5th wheel. I guess I will run by 798 on my way to a test tomorrow. I heard that they have you work for a year then lay you off and send you to there school while they pay you (like 300 a week) and you collect unemployment. But thats just what I have heard. hell I would love to run cross country. Nothing like working outside. Maybe thats why I hate being in a shop and running that damn gun. I am willing to work 7 12s if I have to. I just dont like the idea of having to pay a union. I guess they make it worth your while from the talk around here. What do you think JONESee?

Re: out of welders

Also, RVs are cheap right now you should find a good deal. We use an Air Stream. Best bumper pull on the market. And you can home school your son on the road. Thats our plan, my son can learn the truth from his momma, not what these crazy schools are teachin today. I want my son to grow up looking at me like I did that old pipelinen 798 hand. And not be brain washed to think he is to good for hard work, like kids seem to think today.

just my 2cents
