I was in the Navy from 08-11 as a logistics specialist (formerly storekeeper). I've been working at a marina on beautiful Lake George in upstate NY since I got out. Presently going to school to become a Marine Tech. Got introduced to welding at tech school.

I'm currently a full time welding student and part time gun smith. I also run a few cows and artificially inseminate cattle in the west Georgia and East Alabama area. Prior to that I was a Fire Apparatus Operator and Paramedic with a large Georgia metro fire department. I was also a professional rodeo cowboy but broke my pelvis in 5 places and had to retire from that and the fire department because of the pelvic fracture.

Re: What does everyone do?

I've been working as a certified pipe welder since 1978, it's the only thing I know how to do. Went to trade school in Morgan City, La. in 1977, got schooled up on pipe and followed my older brothers into the offshore welding world.
Then progressed into building offshore platforms on land and from there made it into process piping in oil refineries. Worked all over the western US from Louisiana all the way up to Alaska, spent 10 years doing pipe welding for the oilfields up there.
Studied up and took and passed the CWI exam in 2007 but I didn't use it enough and it expired, so I'm back to being a rod burner again. It ain't so bad, I always did like welding quite a bit, especially TIG welding stainless pipe, it has almost an artistic quality to it, what with the pretty colors and all.
I'm in Mississippi right now, trying to get hired on for KBR at the Chevron refinery in Pascagoula. They have busted out many a welder testing for that job, I passed the test without too much trouble, now I just need to get over the rest of the hire in hurdles.

Locksmith since I was 14. Now after almost 11 years I have to decide. Try to buy the business, work for a new boss, or change careers.
