Jeep work
Been on the site for a while, just sitting back and enjoying the wealth of information and ideas. The recent jeep roof rack thread has inspired me to share some of my work. No up close welds or anything, but having the welders (220V stick and 220V MIG) sure is great when you want to do your own mods.
1990 Cherokee with 6.5" long arm lift (purchased) and I built the roof rack and the front bumper. Plans for this year are relocating the rear leaf mounts, replacing the sheet metal rockers with rectangular tubes (that double as air tanks) and replacing the front D30 axle with a D44 with air locker to handle the upcoming 35's and finally getting around to putting on the rear flares |

Re: Jeep work
Looks good, but I would shy away from using the rockers as air tanks. Reason being, they will be bashed much more than a central tank tucked up above the frame rails. With a welded tank & pressure inside it, it could be a potential bomb if struck in the right place & a weld fractures.
The Jeep looks good & you've already made some excellent mods on it. Rockers made out of rectangular tubing or round tubing will really help keep the sheetmetal from caving in.

Re: Jeep work
Dont get a d44 out of a rubicon. They are junk. only thing d44 about them is the ring and pinion. everything else is d30 junk. i say go Full width High pinion 44 out of a bronco or f150

Re: Jeep work
I considered going full width for the longest time - back and forth, til I finally decided to stay relatively stock width. I already put a Ford explorer 8.8 with disc brakes, LSD, and 4.10's in the back, so I am going with a wagonneer 44 up front. It will be trussed. I only plan to go up to 35's and I am relatively easy on the skinny pedal so it should hold up fine.
That will be my next project that I will post pics up for - trusses for the 44. |

Re: Jeep work
The rubicon D44 is just fine for an XJ/YJ swap. IMHO.
Got some nice looking XJ's there gents. Curious if you wander over to www.jeepforum.com???

Re: Jeep work
All this talk about heeps
just joking JeepsI wheel a 79 FJ40 w/ alluminum tub, Bilstiens, chromolies in the axles the works on 38s whith a stock low hp mtr....anyway...and never wheeled a jeep untill I needed one because the above money pit was under more construction. ![]() During one of my builds I bought a nice 93 Wrangler from a friend locked and geared ready for some pretty good trails. I really enjoyed it. Took it out a bunch of times and decided to try a trail called 1410---you know the U-joint size does that say anything about the trail or what. Well here is the aftermath. Basically stock 30 and 35s with 33" TSLs Broke both front axle shafts, rear u-joint (go figure), and the left front ball joint ears so the !@### front wheel went rolling down the hill. All within two minutes ![]() ![]() ![]() I was a chore stuffing that heep back into the trailer at 4 am in the morning with 3 wheels

Re: Jeep work
Pics from LanceM won't download on my machine, but if their anything like what Skewerly put up, it's no wonder you guys have to know how to weld. I can hear every piece of bodywork on that Jeep groan as it's goin' over those rocks

Re: Jeep work
Owning a Jeep requires learning many skills to keep things going. Knowing how to weld and build stuff is a huge asset that separates the men from the boys. Anybody can buy sh*t and bolt it on; but there is nothing more pleasurable then invention and fabrication.
Pics of some of the folks I wheel with. 04TJ 31”s. TT-MML-BL and 2”BB. 06 Rubi. stock.

Re: Jeep work
yeah, I hear ya on that. There are options - I considered narrowing a hi pin 44 to use waggy shafts (that would be totally cool) but don't trust my fab skills and don't want to pay someone else to do it. I think the waggy 44 will hold up - it will have lock out hubs and very limited hwy use as I now trailer it (in case I break something, I still have a way to get it home)

Re: Jeep work
This kid asked me one day if I was going to build my Dj5 into "some kind of insane rock crawler". No, it's SOME kind of thing, but,....no.
See it, it's a white jeep in a snow storm.

Re: Jeep work
My license is SROHTFG....which is GFTHORS backwards, which Means Gift Horse.
The bronco was left to me as a GIFT by my buddy after he passed from brain cancer. Bronco is a HORSE....He had GFTHORS on his plate but when he died his father kept it. Since I wanted to remember him I just flipped it backwards. It was given to him as a gift from his father....long story. Sorry to hijack.....my bad.

Re: Jeep work
A short Bronco fits in well with the Jeeps, and small Scouts, FJ-40's as well.
