Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

As usual, when I think I am going in the right direction, I have to back up and start over! I was trying to wire a 30 amp recpt. and purchased 10/3 wire. Have already ran the wire, so I really dont want to replace it. Problem is the Receptacle and wiring diagram shows slot for hot (blk) hot (wht) and grd (grn); but with the 10/3 I have blk, red, wht, grn; can someone tell me if I can wire the recpt. with installed 10/3 wire or am S### out of luck!

Addition thought; I do know how to wire the 10/3 at the breaker, will I have to get different recpt and change the power cord on the welder to use the 10/3 wire?

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

If this is a 230v only receptacle, use the black as a hot the red as a hot, the green as a ground, tape and store the white.

This (above) is for a 230v only type circuit such as a welder. The wire you have is for a 230v/120v type device such as a dryer. The white is not needed for a 230v only device.

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

Question:

You say 30 amp receptacle but the new machines you list in your other thread all use a
6-50P which requires a 6-50R (50A receptacle)- not that you have to feed it with a 50amp Breaker.

Just wanna make sure you have the correct receptacle before the new kids arrive

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

You bought cable with an EXTRA wire in it, just means you spent too much money, that's all. As mentioned, don't use the white in this case.

And what Ed said. You have a 30A circuit, but the machine still wants a receptacle with the 50A configuration, a NEMA 6-50R, unless you change out its plug, which you are allowed to do also. They just all come with 50A configurations so that all standard welders can use all standard receptacles.

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

Thanks for the replies: The recpt I bought is "NEMA 6-50R (50 amp 250V; 2P, 3W)"; on the Miller 180, I read it as if I only needed a 30 amp breaker; I may be totally confused on being able to use the 50amp recpt plus 30 amp breaker. If my recpt is correct and I can use the 30 amp breaker I will just not use the white wire (Thought about that after I posted the question) but I always feel better when I have someone to help me in a tottttally "OH S### WHAT NOW" moment! Thanks for any addition help! jt

As Mac said good to go- You should label the receptacle "30amp"- although not too critical since you are the only one in the shop:waving

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

'ppreciate the replies; looks like everything will work out when you have someone pushing you in the right direction. I have found out over the years that what I know today I sometimes forget tomorrow so you will see in my shop labels all over the place. I have labels for all my outlets, switches, tool boxes and storage containers. I guess it is CRS disease! (Can't Remember S###) ! LOL made me make a bulletin board just for her and if I dont do those items she puts on the board she doesnt do the "holding" and "lifting" I often need. Thanks again for the help on the wiring. jt

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

it actually depends on what receptacle style u are using and if u wont get caught on nec codes
if u care....a 14-50r or 14-30r can use white (neutral) green (ground) and red & black as ur hots
otherwise above ways will work

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

What's "otherwise"? What's not Code about previous advice? And the receptacle in question is already identified as a NEMA 6-50R.

And if he had only bought the necessary 10-2 (w/ ground) cable, it would have been legal to use the white as a hot, if recolored on both ends.

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

the otherwise was some locales require the the 4 wire setup now for certain items. talkin 4 wire i mean ground, neutral, two hots. it also contributes to a safety factor. but like you said nothing wrong with the previous method.

You're getting side tracked because this installation isn't even about a 4-wire or a 3-wire 120v/240v appliance.

you are correct.....but when you have numerous 240v "toys"...it sometimes seems like an appliance type deal

Re: Need Help on Wiring 240 Recpt

I suppose if you're new here you might not realize how most of what we discuss is purely 240V.
