Re: 6013 question

6013 is a low penetration rod excellent for part build up and repair of non critical cast steel. ...6010 digs about as deep as you can get. A 6011 is a deep penetrating rod as well. 7014 is a low but slightly more penetration than a 6013..

Who won?

Re: 6013 question

6013 is a medium penetation all position, general purpose rod.
That information is right out of my pocket welding book by Hobart company.

6010 is a deep penetration rod with very little build up. It is often used for a root pass on pipe.
6011 is also a lot like 6010 and is often used on galvinized pipe like chainlink fences.
they both have a nitro cellulose base.

I've seen you post about 6013 being good on cast steel a few times now. I just wondered if it's reccomended for that. My experience with 6013 has always been pretty much the opposite. It has a tendancy to crack when welding cast. Seems it doesn't handle the cooling stress too well.

I referenced "cast steel" at the begining of my post, then said "cast" later in the post. The entire question was about cast steel. Sorry

Re: 6013 question

7018 for cast steel, never tired 6013.

7018 takes on some of the properties of the parent metal.

I don't know about 6013. Its truly a sheet metal rod.

'Bout what I figured. I know I tried it once, and never went back.

Until I got familiar with 7018, I used 7014 ocassionally, and had pretty good luck with it. And I might of been just that.........Pretty damn lucky

Now it's 7018 all the way with lottsa preheat.
