Re: Advice to LIVE By

From what I hear it actually was. (You know how that goes)

A employee at the tank farm was told to hook up some regulators, and he thought he'd clean them up first. I understand he used an oil based solvent like mineral spirits or something, and may even have coated the threads with oil to keep them free. He was killed.

Tank farm still uses "illegals", but I guess they train 'em better now. (And to be fair, I'm not sure they are "illegals", but they sure look and sound like it, big ol' straw cowboy hats and funny lookin' cowboy boots)

That ain't a cowboy hat, that's a middle Ohio cornshuckers lid

Never wore cowboy boots in my life. Can't stand the way those pointy toes squeeze my feet

Besides when I kick sh#t I want to kick it, not impale it and carry it around for the rest of the day

Thought it looked familiar. Worked for DDA in the early/mid '70's.

I have two sets of piston lamps and a matching 1/2 piston ash tray somewhere, but since I am not allowed to smoke in the house anymore it kinda disappeared..

Why is Oxygen and Oil a bad combination?

I was sort of looking for something more along the lines of:

The oxygen can get released quickly from the tank, and then suddenly re-compressed at the regulator, which heats it up. Droplets of oil from the threads get mixed into the oxygen, which lowers their ignition temperature the the point that they become easily ignitable by the recompression of the oxygen. This in turn causes the oxygen regulator to rupture, and the internals of the regulator can also ignite in the pure oxygen.

Now, I have no clue if this is correct, but I was searching for what technically happens why oil gets put on the threads.

Re: Advice to LIVE By

Working in a machine shop in the early '70s, the guy in the mechanic shop across the street would bring me something about once a week. Usually cut a hole here or make this hole a little bigger, heat this up so I can take the nut off, something always real simple. Boss caught on and told us both $35.00 an hour 3 hr. minimum for these jobs! (I hadn't been charging him anything for 5 mins work) Anyway, he bought his own torch setup and we didn't hear from him again. About a week after buying his torch setup, he went to turn the bottles of with oily/greasy hands and lost them BOTH in the explosion. That was the day I learned NO OIL & OXYGEN!! Because I didn't know it before????

Re: Advice to LIVE By

OK try this. When I went to firefighting school, the instructor took a paper cup and pit about an ounce of light oil in it and set it on a work bench. Then he took an OBA (oxygen breathing apparatus) and fired it up and set it on the other end of the bench. This was done in a quansit hut. We all went outside to discuss what we thought would happen. About 10 minutes later that quansit hut about came off its foundation. We had ringing ears the rest of the day.

I'd rather not, honestly.

Could you just explain why?

So, what happened to start the explosion? Was the regulator/valve/tank leaking pure oxygen?

Maybe this will help --- all burning processes are a result of oxidation

HUGE NO NO. Oil in contact with pure oxy is instant burning --- AN EXPLOSION --- to put it mildly and anything in the oxygens path no matter what will react the same way.

Rusting of steel is oxidation --- is it burning dunno???? But if you put steel in a pure oxygen environment it will INSTANTLY burn.

If you are really interested, as it seems you are, I would in the very least GOOGLE the subject and get some info. Obviously ya ain't gettin' what ya want here. The information is very available. Maybe try your local welding supplier they might prove to be helpful.

If I were you I wouldn't touch the stuff again until I became FULLY informed by a source other than this.

But it's your life --- and I mean this SERIOUSLY.

By no means should you ever use oxy/acet until you learn al lot more --- You think oxy is tough --- don't F%%k around with acetelene either.
