Built a Bench Grinder Stand This Afternoon

Well I finally got around to building a bench grinder stand today to mount the grinder that Brink and I picked up last summer at a garage sale. I built the stand as a 'receiver' style so I can use the grinder mount portion with the workbench as I plan to install receivers on each end for the grinder and vise. This stand can then also be used for the vise as well if needed.

Shortly after starting it began to rain so I decided it was time to move the bench inside the shop even though it still has the 'temporary' 3/16" thick top.

Gonna be more than one post so standby after this.

Went out to the storage building and it all started out as this.

A shot of one of the 3"x4"x1/4" base piece cuts made with the Hypertherm Powermax 350 set on 22amps. My freehand cuts still need a little work though.

Welded the base up with 7018. 1/8", DCEP set on 110 amps.

2-1/2" schedule 40 pipe for the upright. Masking tape used to mark the cut line. Love that cutter. Try that with your OA torch Sam.

Crude but effective setup. Wooden blocks, flat bar and washers to get everything at the correct dimension and then square the pipe to the base and tack it up. Used the MM200 to weld up everything else.

Grinder stand completed and ready for blasting and painting - when it stops raining. I'm leaving the receiver portion of the 2" tube long for now until I get the bench receivers installed to see just how long I'm going to want it.

Re: Built a Bench Grinder Stand This Afternoon

I planned and built the stand to result in the grinder being at the same height as it will be when istalled in one of the bench receivers. With the stand slid under the front rail, its reciever is shown in the exact place the bench receivers will be located and thus the positon the grinder will be in when installed in the bench. You can also see the 6" channel for the grinder mount plate.

A work of art Be careful moving that bench, I already have one parent with severe back problems. Are those some of the bolts that were sitting in the wheel barrow? Oh and it's nice to see you using stick on a project. Pretty happy with the rod? Keep the projects coming . . . more ideas for me to steal later

Abstract maybe.

The bench moves easier than you'd think and even easier once in the shop on the smoother concrete.

Yup, that's exactly where those nuts & bolts came from. The one shown in the side was longer than the one that wound up in it which is now the same length as the top one.

I was going to do the whole thing with 7018 and just tack up with the MIG but didn't want to keep switching the power cord between welders. Yeah, the rod ran nice.

As long as you don't plan on stealing the stand.

Good Job Duane. Do you paint your stuff? I rarely paint my stuff.

Just a note for those interested. HF sells 18" receiver tubes for 10 bucks. I get 2" tubing drop readily, however it is rare for me to purchase 1/4x2.5". The HF stuff is a nice alternative to purchasing a 20 feet stick.

I prefer to but the only things I've been able to paint yet are the shelves, filler rod holder frame and electrode rack I built for the Syncrowave 180 SD. I'm still out of blasting media and when I get more I need to blast the plasma cutter cart, MM200 shelves and now the grinder/vise stand before painting.

I will most likely paint the bench frame but not the top as it gets tacked to and would only get scratched up so I don't see any sense in painting that.

don't forget the antenna mount.

speaking of blast media, are you going to be looking into the sand idea and possibly a quality hood? Just curious.

Good Job. I like the simple design and that you can adjust out the arm that holds the grinder. I might steal this design if you don't mind. I have a grinder that I've been needing to mount. The Tube with the lock nuts/bolts is 2.5 " and the "arm" is 2" tube? any tendency to wobble or does tightening down on the bolts take care of that?

Thanks dakook. Not sure just how long I'm going to leave that 2" tube until I get the receivers installed on the workbench.

Steal? It's posted for any and all to see and use as desired. Go for it!

Yup, 2-1/2 OD with the jam bolts and 2" for the mount. The top jam bolt holds it vertically secure and the side jam bolt was installed 'after the fact' to take care of any side-to-side movement.

Re: Built a Bench Grinder Stand This Afternoon

Very nice design--- I like the receiver head on it. It gave me an idea looking at the extended arm---I've got a standard dual wheel grinder like that and a single wheel buffer/wire brush motor that I use to clean bolts/parts with.

Looking at your design,I think I can fit a removable mount to that extension you left hanging to the rear, so I can mount the smaller/lighter motorized wire wheel on it, but still be able to slip it off so the grinder could be removed from the stand fixture. Dual purpose stand that can be used from both sides.

Thanks for triggering a little thinking. I was going to mount the grinder on a post with an old cast iron hay bailer flywheel for a base( 200+#) It's overkill, but I don't have another use for it--LOL. I'm going to give this some more thought....might just add 3-4 stations around a center post for different tools ...each removable--vise? small anvil? place it in the middle of the room and work on all sides.

I bought a very large homebuilt weight machine at an auction a few years ago that is made entirely of the 1/4" wall receiver tube that fits inside the standard receiver hitch tube. Didn't know it until we started cutting it up for something else( I changed my mind even though I only gave $5 for it).

I love seeing what others design...the ideas are always helpful and you did a great job on this project.

Duane--nice work, and so timely, I have a Baldor Buffer that I drag out and clamp to a bench every time I want to use it. I too will now steal shamelessly from your idea, thanks for posting it! This bunch owes you a beer and a steak!

mudbugone - Well there ya go! One idea leads to another. The Welding Web 'stimulus plan'. That multi-tool idea is great. I assume you would stack the receivers perpendicular or at various angles to one another?
Thanks for the compliment.

200 - Just make sure we see some pictures and actually, I owe the 'bunch' alot more.

Re: Built a Bench Grinder Stand This Afternoon

Samm,

It's not so much the melting part, it's the setting the yard on fire that has us worried!

Duane,

Yeah, some 1/2 inch plate gussets will help reinforce things.

More seriously, maybe put some jack-screw leveling feet at all four corners. Just go to your wheelbarrow and get four 6" or so 1/2" dia bolts and eight 1/2" nuts. Drill/punch/plasma holes into the base, weld four nuts to the base over the holes, insert bolts (head-to-the-ground) into holes and nuts, and last four nuts on top as jam nuts to lock into place.

Is the base big and heavy enough? Grinders always seem to want to walk or wiggle unless there is a LOT of stability and weight down low.

Exactly--- With various "branches" sticking out ...they could all be removable(so you could take it apart to move the heavy sucker) as well as adjustable either in/out or different levels or positions.

I've been setting on this big heavy flywheel (4" thick x 20-24") thinking about how to use it. I tore the hay bailer apart and scrapped most of it,but couldn't bring myself to part with that big chunk of iron.

Time to look for some bits and pieces and start welding them together. At least maybe I can consolidate some misc. tools around the shop into a compact work zone instead of here, there and all over. I think I'll come from the ceiling down with a power outlet...no cords to trip over either.

Thanks again for the idea..... The long piece sticking out the rear of the receiver uncut was all it took
