looks safe, he has a backup fence post stuck underneath it, in case the first one breaks

Re: Can you say moron!

Not a very good idea.

Can't say I'm too much better. At least I'm not directly under the machinery when I do this. I often wonder what would happen if the tractor fell while the wheel was being attached. Wouldn't be good. It's one of those "do what ya gotta do" things.

Wish I had pics of a tire change in the field once. Put blocks under the axle, then dug a hole under the flat tire. Very scary stuff on soft ground. Nowdays I just run the tractor to the side of the field, and if the tire gets cut, it gets cut(never actually cut a tire, but I've wasted a few inner tubes this way). I, at least, want to be on semi-solid ground before I mess with it.

After a lot of comments from well wishing people on this site, I've been noodling a plan for an adjustable wide footprint jackstand that'll work on soft ground.

I DO NOT CONDONE THE ACTIONS IN THE FOLLOWING PICS, AND I'M SERIOUS I've just been real lucky so far

Re: Can you say moron!

Did anyone find out if that guy under that truck ever lived to finish that job?

Sam I can't tell you how many times I have done something similar to you bottle jack on blocks of wood. Of course I can count how many times on one hand of the wooden blocks splitting apart under the weight of a tractor.

At least you had a bottle jack. My last rear tire tractor flat was a desperate day. All I had was a crank up jack out of a 70's model GM truck. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Calcium chloride pouring out of the thing making a mud hole, jack kept sinking and falling over......I too, wish I had a pic of one of my tire changes in the field.

Re: Can you say moron!

Worked in a lot of mudholes. Best thing to do in a case like that is put the squirter at 12:00 o'clock & let it run until it stops. Then lots of blocking & a bottle jack to raise it up, then block the frame in front of the axle. That way you have two points to stop the gravity thing (especially when you are underneath a falling rim).

Best option............... call your local farm tire serviceman. They know what they are doing & won't kill ya in the process. I know it's expensive, but who's gonna feed the cows if you are pinned under a tractor?

Samm, in my opinion (and only an opinion) you was just dumb for doing that. I got after my dad for doing the same thing & scolded him til I was blue in the face. I used to fix those tires, and doing it safely is the only way to do it. I've also been an EMT rolling up on farm accidents. Never saw one that was pretty. Use your imagination on any piece of equipment you use. Them's some dangerous pieces of metal.

Good luck on your next tire repair in the field.

Re: Can you say moron!

Some people jump out of planes, others work under heavy machinery with just a jack in place. What fun is life without a little bit of risk involved? . . . . . don't take any of that seriously.

Re: Can you say moron!

Let's see...........

1. Jumped (was pushed the first 3 times) out of an airplane.
2. Worked on heavy machinery (A/C Gleaner combine when drive wheel fell off) without jackstands/blocking.
3. Sat in the bush eyeing targets, while they was trying to eyeball me, I'm still here.
4. Built race car engines knowing if they blew the possiblity of the driver getting killed was rather high.
5. Taking life seriously? I do every single day, because either the direct or indirect actions I perform affect the lives of almost 300 people. Every day, 24/7.

Taking risks? Risks in balance (risk -vs- reward) can be managed. Still the guy welding on his pick-up propped up that way is a moron. Samm using a jack on the tractor tire.......... well that wasn't the brightest thing to do, but it works & knowing what could happen, maybe saved his life.

Stay safe, life is too serious not to.

Re: Can you say moron!

I know that. I accepted you stated that with a bit of sarcasm............

Just wanted to point out this lil ol nurse has done a few things that were risky in his lifetime. And I'm betting my next paycheck, many others here on this website have too.

I've come to the conclusion, life doesn't give a damn about any of us. Not as individuals anyway. As a group (Homo Sapiens) Life does cherish us. But it will not protect us. We have been given the knowledge to make choices, good or bad, right or wrong. This is why we have brains & the ability to demonstrate critical thinking.

I was fixing a tractor tire once along side the road. Had to disconnect the link going to the lower 3 point arm. Didn't think, swung the link up onto the back side of the cab. Stood behind the tractor as I was lifting it with the big air jack, the arm was over center & slammed me in the back of the head.

I wasn't knocked unconcious, but I saw stars for about 5 minutes. I also bled like a stuck hog. I fixed the tire, because the farmer expected that tire fixed, my boss expected me to fix it, I expected to fix it. I returned to the shop, took the rest of the day off. My wife stitched my scalp up, a few days later my headaches wouldn't quit I went to the doctor. X-Ray showed I had a compression fracture on the right back side of my skull.

That is what happens when you don't think a situation through. Samm could get hurt a whole lot worse than I did. I would hate to have to go to Oklahoma to his funeral before his time.

You know, we laugh at those pictures, but at least those guys wear gloves and cover their arms when welding, unlike all too many of the people on this board!

Re: Can you say moron!

guys i had a feed wagon tip over a week ago. No one was under it, but was doing one of my spindle jobs and had a new guy with me. Told him to use concrete block to rest the wagon on and told him to put a 2x4 on top of the block and rest the axle of the wagon on the block. He forgot the 2x4 and while i was working on the spindle i noticed the wagon droped a little, i got up and walked away and by the time i turned around the wagon went through three blocks and spindle in the dirt.

I been on the Fire department for 10 years and have had to remove a lot of dumb asses in those 10 years. I hope that i am not one of those dumb asses.

I run a portable truck. Never carry stands with me, because i have no room for them and you never have the right stand for the right job. I usually use what the customer has available to us at the time.

I better shuddup before you come to Yuma to kick my backside.................

Just funnin ya. I was taught years ago "NEVER USE CINDER BLOCKS TO SUPPORT A VEHICLE". Figure it should be the same for a heavy piece of equipment.

Did yer helper get his walking papers?
