I've seen before a hard hat WITH a hood as one piece. It was pretty cool. I guess you could look all over the internet? Let us know what you find.

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

I use a Fibermetal lid and a fibermetal pipeliner hood with the flip up lens. I added a big, soft sweatband to the headband aswell as wear a welder's cap to keep it from driving me crazy. I started out with the one size fits all band that came with the hood, but didn't like it. It seemed to always want to spin and not be inline when I would flip my hood down. I've since changed over to the pin style quick releases that keep it where it belongs

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

I like my MSA skullgard with the welders lugs on it. They are quick release pins and do not wear out near as fast as the ones from Fibremetal and jackson. I use my MSA with the quick release pins on my jackson Halo X hood because its light. When I started working iron never had to wear a hood and hard hat unless it was at a powerhouse. Harnesses and tying off were hit or miss. At that point when you told and ironworker to tie off he thought you meant to grab his needle not a lanyard....haha

Its this brainbucket

I knew I had seen the metal welder's lugs before on the web, couldn't recall the site. Thanks Ironman. I've been wanting to find some of that style.

Miller has a hard hat convertion kit to install on their auto dark helmits. Works pretty well.

Plus one on the Skullguard, but I wear a bridge hat(full brim). I never had my balls busted for not having a brain bucket on under my hood. If I can find a ball cap with lugs for cheap I will grab it. If you dont want to spend $$$ on a Skullgard get a Fibre Metal with lugs, they are one of the only hats aproved to be worn backwards.

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

Fibre-Metal with a reversible suspension (so you can wear your lid brim over nose) our steel plant wont let us work without that option and a Fibre-Metal 660 shield with an HPV-X Auto lens not bad for light-weight but awesome for out of position welding

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

Tozzi - that is neat as I've ever seen.
I have always just drilled a couple of holes in the hardhat and mounted it to the helmet, cheap and easy. But this looks much quicker to change out.

I thought that too until I bought one for my Miller Elite. The friction discs are too aggressive so that you have to hold your lid with one hand and raise/lower your hood with the other. Also puts the hood way too far from the pivot to suit me.

I'm not impressed at all.

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

Call INPRO they UPS the order out the same day, 1-800-866-1865.
The part number for the hat with lugs is FIBP2QSW (specify color) $24 bucks, and the cups for your helmet are FIB4001 $7 bucks.
Make sure you request a catalog, they have good stuff at a good price.

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

That scarred old blue lid in TOZZI's #15 post looks identical to mine except like I said I have the swivel suspension and its way more comfy its a Fibre-Metal, the spring loaded posts are magic if you have to take off your shield a couple times a day.

Jackson Halo X welding hoods are quite good. They have some models with hardhat.

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

Jackson makes an adaptor kit for their hoods and a matching hard hat. I use one with a flip up lens so I don't have to swap out for a clear faceshield when grinding. I like it alot...

Somebody else talked about having to hold onto their helmet and using their hand to raise and lower the hood. I found this to be a problem with autodarkening hoods that are mounted to hardhats. The added weight will pull the helmet right off your head if you flip it too hard. Just something to consider...

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

I was just gonna say.

I have the exact same setup on my helmet that's mounted to a hard hat, except my hard hat is a red fibre metal helmet with the button release style!

I only use it when It's required though, elsewise I've come to rely on my pipeliner!

Re: welding hoods and hard hats

I use a FibreMetal Tigerhood and FM lid when I have to. The hood came with the attachment installed. Just an oval shaped rig with two ears that snap over the edge of the hat. Fairly light and well balanced. The Halo is a great hood as long as all you do is flat. Sucks overhead.
