Re: Stairs and Rails
The stringers and rails are back from the galvanizer, and ready for a dry run in the shop before they get installed.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Everything fell together, I only hope the next set goes this well. Enjoy.

Re: Stairs and Rails
Very nice? What did you use to weld the rails? Oh, I guess tig.
I finished four sets for a chemical plant a few months ago. Those guys had been climbing ladders for 30 yrs. Multiple trip, daily up 9 foot ladders to feed and moniter hoppers. |

Re: Stairs and Rails
man i dont miss stringers! we used to use a lot of the "jr. channel" to build ours. 12" wide a pounds per foot maybe? i always wondered why we didnt just go with a more heavy duty channel cuz they would warm so bad and we would have to heat straighten them. ill throw a few pics up of the warpage. if we would have welded them like you did the angles we would have had a BUNCH of heating to do. This one was like 3" out.

Re: Stairs and Rails
Very nice. Dry runs a great Idea, too. It can save a lot of time/money/embarrassment. I like to do that on any job that gets galvanized or powder coated. Was the sch 80 spec'd by engineer/architect/end user? Reason I ask is (unless I'm mistaken) sch 40 will pass most codes.
I thought all welders were a$$hole welders, I know I am.

Re: Stairs and Rails
I used to do a lot using 12" junior channell that would warp like El_Lloydeo said. If we were lucky the mate to would be built at the same time and we'd tack them back to back bent the opposite way before welding.......Mike

Re: Stairs and Rails
man that is a great idea. we normally did an opposite hand version. i bet that cut down on the warpage quite a bit. did you still have to hit them with the torch a little bit or did that totally keep them straight?

Re: Stairs and Rails
Not very often, if we did it was just on the ends and usually a well placed belt with a bfh on the edge of the flange (suitably protected with a piece of scrap) would do it.
We didn't weld our clips all around neither, just on each end 'bout and inch or so wrapped around the actual end of the angle and one in the middle. The hardest to keep straight was the crank as there's more weld on the longer length of angle and there usually wasn't a mate to it as the ones with cranks were all the same way...Mike |

Man oh man that's some nice work you've done there. I wouldn't know where to even start something like that. Congrats.
