where to get general education
I am in atlanta and am looking for a introductory class on welding. I am not looking for credit hours or certifications or the like, just the basic here's how not to turn your OxyAct cylinders into fuel air bombs...your welds suck, heres how to improve.... now off with ya class.
Any such? Local tech schools offer classes but I am not looking needing anything that formal. If I buy a local welder a case of beer and they can slap my head when I do it wrong would I get takers? |

Re: where to get general education
Our local college branch offers an intro into welding, one semester, for $125.00. All you need are a hood, gloves & PPE. This is the way to go if you just want basics. Trade schools are more expensive, but they also teach beyond the basics. Maybe someone in Atlanta will respond? Another way is to hire out as a weldors helper. If your working, offer a weldor a free helper on weekends for instruction.

Re: where to get general education
Dekalb Tech is closer, I've been shuffled all through the switchboard and left messagges with two different instructors and ...silence. I will try Gwinnett Tech. Its further away (I'm out 20 East) but willing to drive for the class.

Re: where to get general education
If you are worried about not doing homework and tests and credits and all that stuff, then your local community college is probably your best bet. Just enroll to "audit" the course, and you will be free from all work and attendance obligations and will not receive a grade or credit. I would go for the credit though if I was going to put in the time. You can always use it on a job application or resume even if you do not work as a weldor.

I Think Larry O's keyboard got stuck.
Not sure you'll get any takers on that stop by the shop and get some free learning part. Too many regulations and insurance restrictions limit that as an option.

Re: where to get general education
Looks like Dekalb's welding courses are all at Clarkston Campus. Not sure if that's close to you.
Diploma: http://www.dekalbtech.edu/academics/program.php?id=55 Sounds like you want this one... http://www.dekalbtech.edu/academics/program.php?id=186 You can almost certainly take these courses at various times of the day/week. Give a check of the course schedule to see. Good luck!
