Idealarc Tig 300/300

I have a Idealarc Tig 300/300 it's old and it recently quit working. It won't develop any power I think all I'm getting is the start arc. How do I test the coil to find out if thats bad. I have an other Welder that's the same but doesn't have the foot pedal. I just want to make sure I know whats wrong before I start changing parts. Thanks for any help.

The Operators and Parts Manual at Lincoln. Duanne can probably tell you how to check the coil. I'm sure there are others, too. Good luck.

Re: Idealarc Tig 300/300

S8NSW8N,
Mechanical things to check are:

1) Work and electrode output stud connections - both outside and inside the machine.
2) Continuity of work and torch cables.
3) Current range selector switch for proper slider contact at each setting position and lead connections.
4) Polarity selector switch for proper slider contact at each setting position and lead connections.
5) Contactor contacts for burned condition that could result in no continuity across 'closed' contactor.

By 'coil' I assume you mean the air core transformer? If so, I can't locate a schematic to identify the circuits you would need to probe to check for AC output voltage but with the machine opened up you can do so by locating the transformer secondary outputs that I would think would be connected to the range selector common terminal and one of the polarity selector switch 'AC' terminals.

Is there a wiring schematic on the inside of the machine housing sheetmetal? If so can you get a good legible closeup photo of it?
Duane

Re: Idealarc Tig 300/300

I checked those things they looked fine. Hers what I did. I used an induction ampmeter clamped it on the hose leading to the torch and these are the readings I got. Low- 10-90amps I got 3
Med- 15-150 amps I got 5
High- 35-260 amps I got 15
Max- 60-375amps I got 54
The other tests you wanted me to do I haven't. I'm not all that thrilled about sticking my hands in the welder while it's running.
