Welding to Manganese
I have a shot blast machine that has Manganese (spelling?) liner plates. We recently had to remove the liner plates to replace a bearing. The plates have studs welded to their back side to bolt to the machine. I do not have a stud welder. I can make studs from fully threaded bolts. It is my understanding that the only way to weld to Manganese is with SS. I assume from this the studs will also have to be SS. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Welding to Manganese
I've welded lifting eyes to 350lb manganese hammers before with stainless. The lifting eyes were just cut pieces of steel tubing. They were only temporary, but seemed to hold well as the guys at work have been doing it to a dozen or more hammers every three days or so for the last 4 yrs.

Re: Welding to Manganese
I always use SS electrodes for welding manganese steels and for welding them to carbon and low-alloy steels. The 18-8 chrome-nickel types are popular; however, in some cases when welding to alloy steels the 29-9 nickel is sometimes used.

Re: Welding to Manganese
Check out the catalogs of hardfacing suppliers and you'll find rods for joining and surfacing manganese steels. Just make certain that you select a rod for joining, as many of the hardfacing products are only suitable for surfacing.
I suppose stainless rods should work also, you're basicly trying to maintain the austenitic microstructure. Most important thing to keep in mind while welding manganese steels is to keep the interpass temperature below 500°F. Any higher and you run the risk of cracking during cooling.

Re: Welding to Manganese
silicone bronze rods work great for joining many different melals together and unlike metals to each other you are not melting the parent metals so you dont have to worry about contamination from each other..

Re: Welding to Manganese
Worked 32 yrs on rock crushers and the ONLY thing we trusted to weld mild steel lifting eyes to manganese wear metal was stainless rod. after welding the eye on, we tapped it w/ a hammer. If it didn't ring like a tuning fork, hit it hard to see if it will break off. Trust me, hand, feet and lives were on the line!!!!
