Now I Have to Build Another Stand. . .

. . .for this Wiedemann 12 station manual rotary turret punch press.

Was aquired with some other equipment at a machinery auction and it's been sitting outside at the shop ever since it showed up a couple months ago (at least). So Thursday I asked what we were going to do with it and was told we had no need for it because we have the hydraulic IronWorker. I responded "Do you want it to go away?" to which I was told "Take it.". Don't have to tell me twice so it came home in the back of 'burb last night.

Smallest hole capable is 5/32"(center) as the 1/8" punch is broken. Largest is 1" (right) and the rectangle (guess) is 1/4" wide x 1/2" long. 3/4" punch is missing although the die is there. Material in photo is .063 steel and punched thru with little effort.

NICE fine Duane!!

I've wanted one of those for years but have never found a good enough deal on one.

Thats great. How much throat do you have? I would guess you can go in as far as the center pivot.

To date I haven't done much of any sheetmetal work ZT but with a small shear and brake that could change.

Just over 12" all the way to the back beam. Upper and lower turrets are timed with chain and jack shaft at the rear of the unit so it's a clear span between them. Upper and lower turret lock pins keep the punch and die properly aligned for use.

They still make all the punches for that. They have square punches too. We have two of them. So we can keep some square punches and double punches on a certain machine. Very nice machines.

Awesome find. I am not sure which one you have. One of the ones we have, you have to use a fork, when removing the punch. Especially from thin aluminum. The other one keeps the metal from bending better. But for really nice stuff it pays to make a little "V" fork and use it, when removing the punch from the work.

One has better visibility then the other, when sighting it in. But to be honest if you center punch your work, you can feel the punch line up with the center punch indent, without looking. Sometimes when you are looking you think you have it in the center punch indent. But you do not. Better to feel it line up.

One of the machines is mounted very high, so we can stand and hang on the handle. Ha-ha. The other is low so you can sit down at it.

Make an adjustable stand for yours. Just watch the guys coming into the shop. They might see you sitting down all comfortable, composed and enjoying your work, and give you a nick name like "sit down pee pee". Ha-ha.

If you keep it greased you can just flip the back handle and swing the turret, like a Dillan Aero Space gatling gun. The punches do not fall. Because of the grease.

When it dries up sometimes a punch will fall down a little bit. When you spin the turret something you probably should not do, you hear a crash. Ha-ha.

Sincerely,

William McCormick

With the square punches you can cut, rectangular holes.

Re: Now I Have to Build Another Stand. . .

Thanks for all the pointers William. Or is it 'Sit Down Pee Pee'.

Certainly sounds as if you've put your prints on those handles a few times. This one spins freely, unlocks easily and punches smooth. The spring loaded punch guides seem to keep the punches from falling when disengaged from the ram but then the unit needs a good cleaning too.

I haven't looked yet but I take it Wiedemann is still around? It would be nice to replace the broken 1/8" and missing 3/4" punch and maybe add a couple other shapes depending on what's available.

Adjustable stand? Now I'm going to have to think about that a bit as Brink and I were looking at it tonight trying to decide how tall to make it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Now I Have to Build Another Stand. . .

That's going to take a fairly wide base, heavy base or a bolted down base isn't it?

I don't think it'll be too bad Sandy. It was quite stable just sitting there on the corner of the bench and I didn't have to worry about it pulling over.

Not that much outward force on the handle then? Good deal.

Nice Duane
I get some punch and dies from Cleveland Tool and Die, they make several styles. If you need I can get more info.
