Ground stake?

Anyone ever built the ground stakes for these units? Supplier doesn't have any. I need to make 5 of these units and don't have the pot for sizing. Just thought someone had built some or has this type of pot. Owner wants them to stick in the ground about 10" and stand about 2 feet high. Doesn't know what diameter they are. Got to love guessing.

Re: Ground stake?

So that's where all the smudge pots went. I was wondering about that. When I was a kid, those things were all over every road construction site in the country. There must have been millions of them out there, but I haven't seen one in over 40 years. Wouldn't mind owning a couple, just because, but now they're probably "collectable".

timrb, you can buy them brand new now. They put citronelli oil in them to repell mosquitos.

Re: Ground stake?

I remember seeing those things on the road when I was a kid too. I guess we're showing our age. They didn't come in fancy colors back then though... they were mostly just black with oil and soot, as I remember.

Re: Ground stake?

I use rod iron post from Tripple S steel. They are cheap and decorative. You can cut them in the middle and add other art shapes. Great gifts.

I use old bottles that hold a gallon and you can see the level of fluid without getting your hands black. Then machine a wick holder to fit the mouth.

I thought smudge pots were used in the orange groves...that's where i saw them.
What are they used for on the roadside?

Re: Ground stake?

At about the same time the sumdge pots were in voge, motor oil was displayed in glass bottles along side the gas pump. What about that little brown "eye" in the center of the pump that housed an impeller that spun when fuel was flowing. Do you remember when motor oil came in cans and required a special opener.

Re: Ground stake?

Hey I'm not old but I remember all of those things Remember when the oil cans that required the special opener went from being metal to cardboard with metal ends? If your opener was getting dull you would crush the can before puncturing it and make a mess! I pumped gas as a kid at an Arco station and I haven't seen one of those in quite a while.

Re: Ground stake?

Those smudg pots look like great party entertainment!! Stick 'em along the garden walkway with those open flames and find out how many of the guests are wearing polyester when their clothes catch fire! Just keep a classic old seltzer bottle handy!

Sorry to be a party-pooper. They are colorful and pretty and all, but they also look to dangerous to me. Especially with them sticking up knee high. Polyester skirts and nylon stockings are not a good mix for open flames.

I too remember them at highway construction sites when I was a kid. Mom and Dad would get so mad when they caught me playing with one on the street where we lived. And dirty!!! Black soot all over me! I might have been 8. Why I didn't get burned is as much a mystery to me now as it was to my parents then!

Ask for a wrench and someone will offer you a grinder.
I'll just keep on keepin' on.

I too am worried about putting them up high but I'll sure point out the caution to my customer. He does have some reason and I believe they are placed away from the walk ways and used mostly as insect repellent in our Wisconsin weather

Re: Ground stake?

This page ( http://hurrilantern.en.ecplaza.net/107.asp ) lists the dimensions as

Product Description
Flame Patio Torches 13.5 x 15CM

I'm guessing that they are taller than they are wide.
