Pipe Welding

I am currently attending a welding school and when i am finished, i would like to work for a pipeline company. Is joining a union the best way to go for a pipeline job? What certifications will I need to be hired by a pipeline company? Also, for those who have done pipe welding, is it a good career choice for a welder? I appreciate any information I can receive on this topic. Thanks.
