Good deal?

I found a MM 251 with about 1 hour use on it, and it comes with a spoolmatic 30A gun. I don't know anything about the 30A gun. The owner said he would sell them for $2000..... would you consider this a good deal? just ok? screaming deal? Not a deal at all? Oh, and he said he has a lot of wire to go with it, but I don't have any more details than that.

Re: Good deal?

New MM252 = $2,080.00

New spoolmatic 30A = $998.00

used spoolmatic 30A go for around 450.00 if you can find them.

So you save about 450.00 or 998.00

Didn't ask on that one. Thanks Broccoli, I appreciate the number crunching you did (I thought the guns went 450 new, so I appreciate knowing that)

Re: Good deal?

With the spool gun, and the fact that it is almost new, I think that $2000 is a good deal, but maybe not a screaming deal. If you figure you are paying 2/3 of new price for almost new, that sounds pretty good. If that seems a bit much to you, you might find a better deal on an older unit, but probably not on a unit that is almost new.

The only question that I would ask is if you need the spoolgun, which is basically for aluminum welding. Of course, you could sell the spoolgun later.

Ya, I was thinking if I can buy it, then I could try and sell the spool gun and offset some of the costs... maybe get the 251 for 1500-1600 by the time it is all said and done.

Re: Good deal?

You realize that as soon as you sell the spool gun that you will want to weld some aluminum.

Re: Good deal?

Just offer him 1600 and see what he says, chances are you will pick it up a little cheaper than 2000

Actually, he was asking 2300 for both. I offered him 1500 for just the mm 251. He countered for both at 2K

Re: Good deal?

Both at $2K is a fair deal. Nobody loses. I would keep the spool gun.

Re: Good deal?

Well, he said he purchased it last year and has a warranty card, but doesn't know the status of the warranty. He is willing to come down to $1900

If that can be verified, you have a major part of the warranty left . . . http://www.millerwelds.com/pdf/warranty.pdf

If you buy it, try to get a copy of his original invoice.

Re: Good deal?

Look at the serial number. The first two letters tell you the year. Miller has 3 year warranty on all mig welders.

2009 = LK.
2008 = LJ.
2007 = LH
2006 = LG
2005 = LF
2004 = LE
2003 = LD
2002 = LC
2001 = LB
2000 = LA

Warranty is from date of Purchase so you would still have a 3 year warranty on a 2000 model IF you actually bought it in 2010 from a dealer and have the receipt.

Re: Good deal?

Alright, I bought it. Here are the details:

1. Thank you for the Model info. It is an LG; however, he purchased last year, can give me a copy of the original purchase, and he never filled out the warranty card info. He gave me the card to fill out under my name.
2. The Spoolmatic had a protective leather coat/case around it (see pics). So that was just bonus.
3. I showed up at his house and this thing looks brand-spanking new! He probably hasn't run more than 2 lbs of wire through it in the past year.
4. While at his house, he also gave me his extra wire. Two 10 lb rolls (steel) and Five 1 lb rolls (aluminum), along with a bunch of extra consumables (tips that have never been opened)
5. He provided me a signed paper vouching that the welder is in perfect working condition, and if it isn't he will either buy it back or pay for it to get repaired (I am sure it works as if it did the day he bought it).
6. Finally, as he no longer had need for the tank, he threw it in for free. I think that is a $200 tanks (let alone the argon in it). He only did aluminum welding with it really, (claims he never touched the mig gun for steel). The tank is almost full from what I can tell.

I have to admit, I feel like I did really, really well on this one. Thanks to everyone for the info you gave me. I can't wait to fire this baby up.

Oh, in the pics, I took pictures of the original tips on both the spoolmatic and the main mig gun. You can tell how little use this thing has had.
