So far we have 23 respondents out of a maximum of 100 that the survey site will allow for this free survey.

The results are already very interesting, but the more responses we get, the more statistically meaningful the results are.

This morning, after only three and a half days since we launched the survey, we jumped from 38 responses to 55 responses. As, promised, as soon as we get up to 100 responses, we will post the aggregate results here.

There are very clear and interesting trends emerging.

Thanks everyone for participating in this survey. I listed this at about six or eight different social media forums and twitter and we got a number of people referring us to friends, so I expect this is actually a pretty well randomized sample of the industry. As promised here is the summary data:

1. I am involved in the welding equipment industry 34%, not involved in the welding equipment industry 66%.

2. My age is: 17 or younger=1%, 18-24=6%, 25-34=21%, 35-44=28%, 45-54=24%, 55-64=18%, 65 or older = 2%

3. I have been involved in welding for: 1 year or less=3%, 2 years=5%, 3 years=3%, 4 years=4%, 5 years=5%, 6 years=2%, 7 years=4%, 8 years=4%, 9 years= 0%, 10 years or more = 69%

4. I am involved in welding as a hobby = 40%, as a profession = 16%, as both hobby and profession = 45%

5. We asked for the top 5 favorite welding equipment brands. We scored each 1st favorite with a value of 5 points, each 2nd favorite with 4 points, each 3rd favorite with 3 points, each 4th favorite with 2 points and each 5th favorite with 1 point. The top ten welding equipment brands (excluding accessory brands like gloves and helmets): Miller=34,8%, Lincoln=25.6%, Hobart=9.7%, ESAB=4.95%, Hypertherm=4.3%, Victor=3.2%, HTP=1.4%, ThermalArc=1.0%, Thermal Dynamics=1.0%, Century=0.9%,

6. In my opinion, welding processes are utilized in the following percentages (either jobs or hours): Oxy/Acetylene=10.5%, Stick=25.0%, TIG=25.4%, MIG=51.1%, Plasma=7.6%, Laser=6.6%, Other=8.1%. (NOTE: where "other" was designated as flux core wire we included this as MIG)
