2005 nissian altima floor panels
i am a mechanic at a used car lot and we took in a 05 altima and the passenger floor pan was rotted out completely. i have seen this about 3 other times and we were able to give them back to the auction. this one we own. i am going to plasma cut the floor pan out and weld another piece in my question is what thickness do you think i should use and what can i use to keep the carpet and padding from catching fire?

Re: 2005 nissian altima floor panels
You are going to need to remove the carpet completely and then start brushing down the area to be cut. Get all the underlay and any coatings on the floor off before cutting. Myself I prefer the air hacksaw for cutting old floors out. I just find it more easy and cleaner. I have used my plasma a few times but keep going back to the saw.
Just a note here to make sure before cutting that there are no brake or gas lines in the way. Have a good look under neither before cutting.

my plan was to remove the carpet on that side. i thought it would be enough. all the fuel and brake lines are on the opposite side.

Re: 2005 nissian altima floor panels
Depending on the extent of the rust, it may be easier to just overlay it with another piece. I know, I know it's not the proper way to fix it, but if it's an 05 with a rotted floor, I doubt it's in awesome overall shape and I'm not sure you want to put this much work into it. Your call, just a suggestion is all. I did a floor plan in our '88 chev work truck here about a year ago. I used 14 gauge, but that might be a bit excessive. I have a tendancy to overbuild though. I agree with jamlit. Those little air "sawzalls" are awesome and a grinder of course.
