Welding table build

Well I've started to build a welding table for myself. Plan to build it 36 by 48 Inches with 3/8 Inch thick top. Picked up majority of the stuff for the framework and started this weekend on welding up the four legs. I decided that one pair of legs would have adjustable feet so that I could stabilize the table if the floor was slightly uneven since the table will be moveable. Attached are some pictures of the legs and the accompanying welds.
Pic 1 shows the leg with adjuster and you can see the second threaded adjuster bolt laying on the bench behind it. Pic2 shows a sample of the weld inside the leg and Pic 3 shows the weld on the round foot plate at the bottom of the leg. Any critques on the weld are welcome. I am using a MM211AS with .030 wire and 75/25 gas at 20cfh I am using the auto set feature for voltage and wfs setup.

Re: Welding table build

A good insurance policy when welding threaded assemblies is to use anti spatter spray, or anti spatter dip, on the threads. It keeps spatter from messing up the threads.

Re: Welding table build

Thanks for that tip. I use the anti spatter dip on the torch never thought to put it on the threads. That being said the two posts with treads are done and they both thread up and down fine. Luckily most of the rough welding occured away from the threads. More pics will follow however not to quickly as I may not have much time to work on the desk.

Re: Welding table build

Well time to show a few more pictures of the table. First picture shows the legs and the future lower shelf area. Second shot shows the table more or less complete upside down after the leg assembly was welded to the table top assembly. A few more minor things to do while upside down and then we'll set her up on the concret. Next post will include the finished picture shots.

Re: Welding table build

The round guide holes are for the contraption that will hold the wheels that I'll use to roll it around. I've almost finished with it on it's back should be flipping it over and will then also include pictures of my wheel assembly if it works. It might be a while for the final pictures as I am heading off for a few days to visit the folks.

Re: Welding table build

Well I flipped the table over on it's legs and my wheels work like a charm
I still have a little work left to do cut the expanded metal and install it on the two shelves under the table as well as securing the lower table assembly and then a couple spray bombs to make it look good. First picture shows the wheel assembly when still upside down. One end had fixed wheels the other end had rotating wheels. Second picture on the ground shows the wheel assembly in the down position. The flat bar that is on the vertical is the lever you stand on to lower the cam that pushes the wheels down and raises the table by 1/2inch. The third picture shows the same setup with the table back down and the cam off centre allowing the wheel assembly to come up and the table legs to lower back to the ground. Fourth picture just shows the lower half with the support for the upper and lower shelves. All and all I'm quite happy with it. The wheels work and if the floor was clean it rolls smoothly. The table is 41inchs high which for this 6ft5in fellow seems to work fine.

Re: Welding table build

Looks real good. Do you think the arms to engage/disengage the wheels will be in the way? Seems like you would want it flipped up like that when the wheels are DOWN instead of stowed so you didn't have that piece sticking up getting in your way when you store stuff on the bottom shelf.

Re: Welding table build

True, however the engage/disengage arms line up just inside the overhang of the table and I don't think i'd want much stuff to stick out past this as it would get in the way of working around the table. However only time will tell once I start stuffing stuff on the shelves whether it does get in the way.

Re: Welding table build

Well I thought I might as well post one last picture of the completed table. Everything worked out like I planned only time will tell if the plan was right or if I need to make modifications. Looking forward to working on the first project on this table later this month.
