Welding Newb, Hi all!

Hi everybody,
Been searching this forum for the past couple days and figured I'd stop lurking. I spent 6 years in the Navy before starting college. I was a Nuclear Electricians Mate onboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt for 4 of those years. Now I'm a senior in the mechanical engineering program at Colorado State University. The only welding experience I have is a little shop class and helping my Dad with random projects. I picked up a 1983 Montgomery Wards AC/DC Arc welder a few days ago and tried to get it running. I should've checked all the wiring because after a few days of searching turns out one of the leads in the 220V plug was reversed! Ran my first decent beads a couple hours ago, planning on trying to get a little table set up in the next couple days.

Josh

Hi Ya Navy_p503 and Welcome to the Welding Web Family. Always glad to see more veterans join here. I did 26 1/2 yrs AF, and joint duty with several 3 letter organizations. Did you get that welder to work?

Sure did! Played around with settings for a couple hours today. I'm planning on picking up some material tomorrow to build a welding table and practice some more. I'll try to get some pic's up tomorrow of some decent beads and see if I can get some critiques

For some free metal for practice or building projects always be on the lookout when traveling around on trash days. Bed Frames make some great framework for many projects. Sometimes even driving behind the big stores and malls and malls can net some good stuff (just be sure to ask the store manager before driving off).
