Gearing up with retirement....

Hey guys,
Well, after a year & a half laid off, working sporadically, our company is folding & merging(they hope) with another. I was called in Thurs(4/15) to pick up my tools & personal belongings. Looks like I get to retire. At 66, I'm ready..... now I can really get hummin' with my shop.

I started to fab some accessories for the auto enthusiests at the local drag strip that my bro' hooked me up with. He gets me a free season pass as I take my mobile rig there for those "just-in-case" repairs that may arise. Makes for a nice day & work possibilities. Seems that most have to get many items catalog/online/mail order & pay the xtra cost of shipping. I was queried if I could fab some alum. wheel chocks & engine lifts for a reasonable price. After doing some homework for material & labor, I set up for some production runs. The first (2) pics are the wheel chocks using 1/8"(.125) 6061 & the 3rd pic are the 1/4" engine lift plates. I used MIG for production(&profit). Both sets of chocks & (2) of the lift plates are sold & I'll, hopefully, get a few more orders tomorrow at the track. Here's the pics.

All of your projects look great and its a good way to supplement your income and keep busy at the same time. I retired twelve years ago and am in the shop every day. I now work at my speed. You only live once, so enjoy your retirment. Just curious, are those small blocks in the back ground going to be cookers or mail boxes or what?

Well that's not the most ceremonious way to retire, but I honor your work. From the few pics you posted, its pretty clear your one the last of the lot, who can bring skills beyond your pay grade to every project. Can't wait to laugh and point at the outsourced, foreign crap we brought upon ourselves!

Cheers!

Re: Gearing up with retirement....

Hey guys,
Thanks for the upbeat & I can see many rewarding days ahead. I have been most fortunate to have worked in many facets of the magnificent world of metal & have learned from many superb minds who were generous with their talents to give me a wee bit at a time. I found it gratifying & never gorged their gifts prying into their offerings for more....I simply took each & every mental handout graciously as they would test my hunger to learn.

Now, I just want to give back all those "little secrets" I have accumulated for the last 50yrs & hopefully will inspire & help the youngsters & newbies really understand the hunger too learn. There is so much in the vast arena of metal, I hope to just provide the interest to constantly strive to attain the goal of personal satisfaction that it CAN be done.

I will post my ideas, suggestions, & projects, along with the processes to help understand the initial patterns to bring ideas to fruition. Yup.... gonna like this retirement gig....

Hey Millwright's Son,
If you go back thru some of the past project pages, you will find many pics I have posted here. Many are with complete fab & weld details from start to finish. You may find something interesting.....
