When a plant is shut down for maintenance (changing valves, vessel repair, replacing worn pipe) they lose money every minute they are not producing product (whatever it may be) and bring in man power working 12 hour shifts to do the work. Its a big money maker and you can make 8k a week or more. Some shutdowns can be one week long and some will be months long.

I know we are in a recession, but $26 an hour is kinda low for even a single hand welder...but if it was a choice between starving and working, you know how it goes.

Maybe you can make up for it in massive OT.

I have seen you throw out big figures like this on more than one occasion. I'm curious as to what specific welding jobs are paying $8,000 a week or more? We are talking USD right?

Just as an example, at the local powerplant, a contractor pays about $26/hr for pipe welders who pass a 6G test for carbon and stainless, and sometimes inconel.

So if you worked 7 12's, that would come out to 84hrs at $2184. Throw in $100/day per diem and it comes out to just under $2900 a week. So what am I missing here?

Re: Shutdown Leads??

Weekdays: $26/hr straight time, overtime after 8 hrs at time and a half ($39/hr)
Weekends: first 8 hours at time and a half ($39/hr); ovetime after 8 hours at double time ($52/hr)

Mon....8 hr @ $26 + 4 hr @ $39 = $208 + $156 = $364
Tues...8 hr @ $26 + 4 hr @ $39 = $208 + $156 = $364
Wed....8 hr @ $26 + 4 hr @ $39 = $208 + $156 = $364
Thur....8 hr @ $26 + 4 hr @ $39 = $208 + $156 = $364
Fri......8 hr @ $26 + 4 hr @ $39 = $208 + $156 = $364
Sat.....8 hr @ $39 + 4 hr @ $52 = $312 + $208 = $520
Sun....8 hr @ $39 + 4 hr @ $52 = $312 + $208 = $520
Total for the week = 5 days @ $364 + 2 days @ $520 = $1820 + $1040 = $2860
Ditto JoshD... hard to see how $26/hr could exceed $3,000/week.

However, OT rules may be different; some companies pay double time on Sundays and holidays.
E.g. Years ago, I used to make a lot of OT dollars working the power-plant shutdown that began on the Easter weekend with 12 hour shifts on Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Easter Monday.

Re: Shutdown Leads??

Thanks for informing me about what a shutdown is. Sounds like something I can work toward as my welding improves. Good luck to all!
