Yes...Another Welding Bench...Oh My God!

I didn't think I would ever be doing one of these posts, but I'm on a TDY for a year and couldn't live without a bench to work on. I also have wanted for the longest time a nice plate to work on, so I bit the big one and had my local steel yard plasma cut 3/8" plate which is dead flat and square corners. Still have to attach a few power boxes (quad receptacles). I am also going to drill and tap a series of holes in the top for hold down clamps.

Leveling feet in case you guys need an idea, these are 7/8 bolts with a washer welded on. The nuts fit nicely after knocking off a could of corners and press fitting inside 11 gauge 1 1/2" tubing. The bolts were turned on my lathe to both flatten the heads and true up once welded.

This thing is very nice; I like the adjustable feet. Is anything supporting the front of those lower shevles? (The corners closest to the rolling Miller)

Nice design, well thought out. But why all the nuts and bolts with those welders available?

Nice job 200! Handsome dog.

Bob, I believe the bolts would be to allow breaking it down for transport when his TDY is up.

Re: Yes...Another Welding Bench...Oh My God!

If you want it to stay flat you really should think about putting some supports across the middle, or else that table is going to look like a drain pan in short order.

Re: Yes...Another Welding Bench...Oh My God!

Gents:

Yes the bolts are for disassembly it may need to go into a U-Haul Trailer, otherwise it would have been welded solid. Drilling all those holes without a drill press was a Cast Iron Bitch, never again.

sn0border88--you are right I was thinking of a couple of middle supports with flanges on each end to bolt up to the legs. I was thinking of using the 1 1/2" tubing. The 3/8 plate is close to 300 LBS.

gordfraser--that blue radio thing on the end is a Thermal Injection Rotary Left Handed High Speed Plasma Cutter. It was an early Miller Spectrum 300 good for 3/8 plate but I have pushed it to 5/8. I have had it since about 1998. Great little unit. Someday will be an upgrade to a unit that will cut 1". The Motorguard Filter is down below it.

Mellotron--no supports on the shelves, I know it looks odd but I didn't want anything obscuring a broom. I have another table like this that has gone for over twenty years that way and still dead square.

To all--thanks for the kind words.
